A large percentage of Rain Lamp owners never used the correct type of oil in these lamps. Some used olive oil, vegetable oil etc. I'm still guessing that Derek's lamp was filled with something other than mineral oil. If the smell of death was acquired from a stinky home...well that's just nasty. and Dood mine never stinks. :p

My opinion is, Rainlamps just stink anyway. Just my opinion, of course.

Deb- from what i understand it is not the mineral oil itself that goes rancid, it's the scents that the mineral oil absorbs.  So if the last owner had a really stink home, their lamp will end up stinky too.

I'm wondering if someone used vegetable oil in it. That stuff turns rancid, mineral oil does not. Leaving the lamp a full day in the sun is said to be good for killing bacteria and removing odors as well. Mine never had any odor and I was told it sat for years in a closet.

Derek I hear ya..nothing like rancid smell of death .. i found one local...sadly its junk but some decent parts on it...and no smell.. perhaps if you brave into dissecting it.. and why not.. if it stinks so bad its useless right.. even worse would be heated death smell wafting thru your home..you could use this one.. I actually am going across river tomorrow and I will give it a good thorough look over and get photos.. he said he would let it go for 5 bucks. Just a thought.. let me know.

Kira, I want one.  Can't bear to even unwrap the one I have again.  I'm not buying one sight unseen again.

I'll try again.  It smells like a dead animal.  Was yours that bad?

Hopefully the link will help. I don't think it's necessary to totally dismantle it. The base and top are pretty simple to get to. Good luck :)

No, I was scared to disassemble it.  I'm not the most handy person in the world and have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to these.
