Most lamps can spike under the right conditions, but it's been my experience that the older the lamp is, the more likely that it will spike. It's just the molten lava erupting and "freezing" in the cold water above, right at the beginning of the flow cycle. It's one of my favorite parts of it though!

Pardon my ignorance but how do you get a lava lamp to spike like this? I love it ;-)
