Lava wall update: May 2017

"Awesome! I've managed to find orange, green, pink, and blue x2. I still need the red, yellow, and purple. :) They look great all together, even without the pink. Anybody want to trade a blue base and cap for a red, purple, or yellow? :p"

Night of the Hunter

This is a group for those who have an interest in the so-called Hunter lava lamps named after their founder, Mr John Edward Hunter who attempted a patent on his Sata-Lite model in c. 1970. Later version was called the Sparkle-Lite using glittery strands in the liquid. They came in various designs but more or less one size and with only one bottle type but numerous colour combos in both wax and sparkly strands to glitter.

"Your wax 'clings' to the top surface as mine does... except mine makes a column from base to the top.  I was wondering if there was a known fix to stop the clinging.  Water density maybe or a rheostat to cool the temp? Thank…"

So I found a faded #24 at a flea market...

"Thanks, everybody! And hey Tim! I used 2 waterbased markers to color the liquid, a neon green one, and an emerald green one. I mostly used the neon one, but added 2-3 drops of the emerald green to darken it a bit. The result is a green that is…"

A Glitter Odyssey: Pt. V, The Home Stretch

Posted on June 4, 2013 at 1:30pm 11 Comments

Whew! this post has been a loooooooooooong time coming.

Well, as many of you know, I've been working on making custom punched glitter, ever since I first saw that WaMu lamp and bought it on ebay...the one with the house-shaped glitter flakes. That lamp infected me with an idea!

It's taken me a lot of time, effort, and money, but I'm finally close to being able to take custom cut glitter orders...but with a disclaimer.

So ok, first things first...

After trying all…

A Glitter in Time

Posted on May 6, 2013 at 7:17pm 17 Comments

I know it's been forever, but it's been a long journey for me. I finally found a glitter that works in the lamps I sell, found out what it's made of, found out how thick it is, found out where to buy some, and now I'm waiting to hear back from a ton of wholesale distributors. At first all I could find were manufacturers with minimum order requirements of 1-10 tons, but I finally found the distributors. Hopefully soon I can order some, but in the meantime I've ordered 12 different colors of…

EUREKA!!

Posted on September 27, 2012 at 11:30pm 6 Comments

On a hunch, I decided to try and spray some stripper onto an UNpainted lamp. I just couldn't figure out why in the world only the inside of the cap anodised! I knew why the base didn't, and that's because I didn't connect the power correctly, but the cap? My friend who is helping me said something about aluminum being pre-anodised sometimes in order to seal it to keep it from oxidizing...but how did they anodise it without getting ALL of it? There must be something sprayed on…

Misadventures in Modding Pt. III

Posted on September 18, 2012 at 10:30pm 5 Comments

Sigh...

Throughout this entire venture, there have definitely been ups and downs. Here lately though, it seems like there have been way more downs than ups! First I hear that the mail ruined Bridget's lamp. :( She did all she could to try and salvage it, but it just got worse. I'm in the process of fixing that for her, but in the meantime I was trying to anodise, and finishing up Drew's third lamp. First off, it would NOT stop raining long enough for me to paint! I FINALLY got a brief…
