Where I Live:
USA
My First Lava Lamp was:
I was teaching at age 21, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics and Physical Education when I used to routinely go to Spencers in the mall and long for the Fantasia Sunburst 4000 black base multicolor rotating colorful Which was at that time $500.00. That was like a million dollars to me. I waited, saved and thought this is going to take years so I put it on a credit card, made the jump sale with my heart pounding. I took it to school as a school counselor after I moved from teaching to school counseling. I put the Sunburst lamp in my school office where upset children, children of abuse and poverty and even the large two story teaching staff started to fill my office with frequency to calm themselves or enjoy the lamp. It was mesmerizing to so many years of children for I was in education for 38 years when a school riot injured me severely and ended my career, but the purchase was paid off for the lamp and worth 1000 times it's worth in helping people in different ways, as well as enjoyment. While in counseling, I taught at the University of Louisville from where I graduated. i took the lamp to my students at the college. They begged me to bring it to every session but I told them it was fragile and afraid of breakage. I guarded the lamp and told the children no to touch it but they could not help it.....even the teachers. It created holes where the broken fibers should have been. I just was busy and could not watch it all of the time, They had their hands on the fiber optics even when I told them it would harm the lamp. I NEVER got angry for anyone who damaged and broke fibers and many of them are still good to this day. I was unaware of a replacement color wheel. I am interested even now to purchase two because I bought a base when mine stopped for $95.00. The black base I bought does rotate but maked a grinding sound but it does presently work. I finally found an uneducated country girl who said she tinkered in mechanics. I knew her through one of my still very close not grown up students. She took it home and has it apart right now, March 27th, 2026. Ironically it is my birthday today and I have been bombarded with many adult students, family and friends. I was shocked but was well enough to stay up past my limits to enjoy and celebrate so many people who came to wish me a happy birthday. The Sunburst was on and all of them admired and commented on it. I had a suprising and wonderful birthday! I never expected that thousands of students loved me so much and all of my family and friends. I am so happy regardless of how long I have left to live. I enjoy that lamp every single day. I hope it keeps running and have no idea of how to maintain it but it runs. I need 2 sets of new 18 in. fiber optic stems to replace the damaged original one and need one for the black base I bought on ebay.
My Collection Includes this many Lava Lamps:
If I can get the fiber optics 18in for the sunburst 4000,, I will have 2 lamps.
My Favorite Lava Lamp is:
My favorit lamp is the Fantasia Sunburst colorful rotating fiber optic 4000. It is hands down to the other cool things I bought for the children when I began teaching. I have lost some of the things that I am looking for that I don't believe are replaceable anymore unless I find one several items that are vintage.
Reason for joining OozingGoo:
I was flipping through the pages because of the woman who mechanically tinkers with getting things running. She did get the original one running but does not know how to service it. I am looking for instructions everywhere but cannot find them. But, she did get the 1970's original one I bought at Spencers in the Mall working and I am grateful and delighted. She is looking around on how to service it while she had is apart. If she can get it serviced, I am going to giver her the base of the one running now with the somewhat damaged fibers from the children who just could not keep frim touching it. I did warn them about the fibers getting in their skin but they loved that lamp and they felt and played with the fibers anyway which is why I am suprised and happy to find your website. So, that;s my story on the lamp and that $500 was the best investment in education that had a tremendous impact on so many children and adults. It makes me happy everyday with the time I have left since I have Lyme disease, Malaria and other mosquito parasitic infections that are imbedded since the school beating. I had to take off and go to Florida where my Daughter, her Husband and my Grandson were living. The business they were starting left me to care for myself. We were all bitten by mosquitoes and thankfully they received treatment from a doctor who was trained in New Delhi where this is common. She saved my life but I wam immuno compromised from the school riot where I sustained serious injuries. I believe that is why I didn't beat the mosquito diseases they carried. But I am so grateful that my children are OK. I am so proud of my Grandson. He just graduated at age 26 from law school with honors and is licensed in three states, KY, IN,, and Georgia. Thank you for developing something that means so much to me. I am positive others have their own valuable precious unique stories to tell about their lamps. My Hospice doctor told me I have 6 months to a year left to live. I am an Aries, a fighter and do not quit easily. I am going to prove him wrong. I also have dirofilaria immitis which is the common dog heart worm. It is painful. But!!!!! I'm going to try and get two fiber sets to make two Sunburst 4000 lamps since I enjoy my one that is working daily. Thank You so much for developing and handmaking these things that arre vintage with each person having their own attachment to these awesome lamps. Thank you fo making them and please let me know when you are available for me to buy two 18in fiber optics and if you have them, I would like to replace the color wheels. if there is anything else I need, I would appreciate you input an help.
