Anyone know how to make a newer lamp more active like the 90s lamps?

Hi,I have a 52 oz globe from Spencer's, and I noticed that it really only tends to flow nicely when I put it on a 50 wattage bulb and it flows beautifully just like a 90s USA lamp. The lamp uses a 40…Continue

"Okay, I have never seen the sticking wax issue before. Do you know if SLS will also prevent stickage? I am having difficulty finding pure SLES, but I can't keep myself from starting this refill, haha."

"SLES is a surfactant. A surfactant is required to to prevent the wax from sticking to the glass."

"Wow, thank you for that list! That sure helps, considering I have my hands on all of those except for the SLES. Do you think there would be much of a difference without the SLES added? I will continue to search for it online, but I am going to try…"

Autumn replied to Kyle S's discussion Any solution to this flow issue?
"Yeah I've noticed that glycerol will do that. Propylene glycol won't, but you can really only add about 30% before the liquid starts to cloud. I've been extensively researching the formula and I do not totally understand the impact of…"

Kyle S replied to Kyle S's discussion Any solution to this flow issue?
"Hi! The globe has been at the correct temperature. I have added the glycerol to the lamp which totally saved the problem- the wax is up and flowing nicely! However, I think that adding the glycerol may be the cause for extremely bubbly wax. Do you…"

Autumn replied to Kyle S's discussion Any solution to this flow issue?
"What temperature is the globe getting to? It should get to about 120F to flow and can get up to about 140F at full temperature. I can't say for sure, but this could be a density issue. You can add glycerol in 1-5ML amounts at a time and see…"

Lava flowing poorly ?

Hi all,I have a 90s USA lamp with some strange flow. I have uploaded photos below; The majority of the melted wax tends to stay in a dome at the bottom, while releasing little "bubbles". It stays at the bottom the entire time, even though there is still some minimal flow. I tilt it side to side, and the wax at the bottom moves around- it's almost like the wax stays with the coil. The issue may not be the heat output.. I leave it on for 4 hours and it flows this way. I left it on overnight, and it…See More

"Wow, what a good steal. Lava lamps are very hard to come by at second-hand stores in my area, I have never seen one. I see you may have uploaded photos but they do not open. I would love to see if you shared some more !"

Kyle S replied to Rich C's discussion Adding wax a bad idea?
"It is possible to work. I did something similar to this when I combined two of my 32 oz lamps into a 52 oz globe. Two different lamps, two different formulas. Despite differences in their recipes, the waxes still combined with one another. When you…"

"Beautiful lamps, Keith. I love those silver centuries and their colors! Your case sounds interesting, and that blue flow is certainly beautiful. I was concerned about using a higher wattage bulb because of fire hazards and also because it is on a…"

Kyle S replied to Steven Marra's discussion Bottle glued to base, I think... Ideas?
"This looks a lot like the earliest versions of the original century base. The first models were gold but the bases tend to turn silver over time- I have an early 70's century and the poor base is no longer a shimmering gold. As far as the goo…"
