DIY Glitter lamp question

I’m planning on making a glitter lamp. From what I understand Calcium Chloride makes a slow lamp and Calcium Nitrate makes a fast lamp. Is that correct? Not sure if I should bother with Calcium…Continue

Hi Everyone,I have always replaced my Grande bulbs with the clear 100w reflector bulbs, which are expensive.I noticed that you can get frosted ones for much cheaper. I was under the impression that…Continue

Do you have experience with liquid wax dye?

I want to change the color of the wax in my grande lamp. I have liquid wax dye. Since the dye is an oil, I am afraid if I add a lot of dye to make a rich or a dark color, it will thin out the wax and…Continue

DIY Glitter lamp question

"Thank you SO MUCH for the info Adrian! Have you tried Calcium Chloride? It's easier to get in larger quantities. I've read that there are problems with it in glitter lamps."

"Hi Adrian, It seems that you've already successfully made glitter lamps (except for the glitter itself). I want to try my hand at it, but I have no idea how much Calcium nitrate I need. How much do you use to produce a lamp that's…"

"I have tried liquid wax dye. You are correct, lots of dye will make the wax appear very dark, like black; a little bit goes a long way. I've also seen the wax thin out with the liquid dye, certainly looking more glossy. This all results from…"

Transparent wax problem.

I have a problem with my grande lamp. I changed the fluid because I wanted a different color. I replaced the fluid with pure distilled water plus surfactant - since that time the wax is completely transparent. I want to get it back to being opaque. I have no problem with the flow, it flows completely fine, so I know that the weight ratio of wax and fluid is correct. The transparent wax is the only problem. I’ve seen explanations for why wax turns transparent, and none of them apply to me - some…See More

Something Interesting About Me:
As a kid I spent much time looking at lava lamps in catalogs. The original gold-ish base yellow liquid red wax and then the blue/green version. I remember thinking how hideously ugly and stupid the “Mediterranean” wrought iron one was. I was obsessed with their tag line “The light of a million moving shapes” I spent LOTS and LOTS of time wondering how you would count how many shapes there were. HOW could it be done!?!?
Where I Live:
New York City
My First Lava Lamp was:
Green and yellow Grande
