I’m planning on making a glitter lamp. From what I understand Calcium Chloride makes a slow lamp and Calcium Nitrate makes a fast lamp. Is that correct? Not sure if I should bother with Calcium…Continue

Do you have experience with liquid wax dye?

I want to change the color of the wax in my grande lamp. I have liquid wax dye. Since the dye is an oil, I am afraid if I add a lot of dye to make a rich or a dark color, it will thin out the wax and…Continue

Heat resistance of Borosilicate glass

Hello All, On the topic of Borosilicate glass, I just want to relate my experience. I made a glitter lamp out of a 2000ml Borosilicate glass graduated lab cylinder. I heated it with a clear reflector 100 watt bulb from a Grande lamp. the bulb had a small space between it and the bottom of the cylinder. I wasn't worried about heat because my thinking was that - Borosilicate glass is used over open gas flames in the laboratory. I figured that the gas flame must be hotter than any light bulb could…See More

Profile Information

Something Interesting About Me:
As a kid I spent much time looking at lava lamps in catalogs. The original gold-ish base yellow liquid red wax and then the blue/green version. I remember thinking how hideously ugly and stupid the “Mediterranean” wrought iron one was. I was obsessed with their tag line “The light of a million moving shapes” I spent LOTS and LOTS of time wondering how you would count how many shapes there were. HOW could it be done!?!?
Where I Live:
New York City
My First Lava Lamp was:
Green and yellow Grande
My Collection Includes this many Lava Lamps:
7
My Favorite Lava Lamp is:
14” purple liquid yellow wax
