I use this ^^^ and set my camera to shutter speed mode (anywhere from 1/4 to 1/30).
If you are too close to the lamp the flash while blur out any color.
Step back use zoom. Sometimes room light helps. Sometimes turning off the flash and using ambient light works.
I usually take a few pics with/without flash. then add/remove room lighting and try again.
You can adjust various features like the iso level, daylight/auto etc. which will help. its just a case of trial & error.
I dont think many people's pictures come out with a full representation of the actual colour (i know mine dont) but its enough to get the idea.
If your camera doesnt have many features like those you can take a picture just after you've turned the lamp off, but with light on in the room. that way you will get the true colour, but obviously you have to do it quickly before the lamp cools down!
The brighter the colour of wax the more difficult it is, so darker waxes, especially blues will come out best. for light colours like yellow/orange i would recommend turning them off to take the pic.
