this is the pic of it just starting up, can you see all the bubbles in it? Is this normal? I thought I had fixed the problem with the air bubbles but dont think I have. Any more suggestions? kind regards jane
Hi Jerome, wanted to get some more info on the problem with my lava lamp....has been shaken and zillions of tiny & large air bubbles have formed in the wax, then after it bubbles a bit, the wax just forms a type of twister that never breaks. So what I have done so far, is to open it up, drain all the coloured water off when the wax was solid, then heat the wax while it is still in the lamp till it is all liquified (in a saucepan with water over a gas stove, making sure the temp doesnt get too hot), then cooling wax down till it solidifies. Then I gently poured the water back in and switched it on. Takes a while to get going but seems at this stage to be much improved, although the wax bubbles are not as big as I would like. Any more hints on what to do? kind regards jane
Hey Jerome, Thank you for the post. What can I say, I just bought a Lava lamp recently but unfortunately it is not working the way it should. The lava just doesn't move, the lava just sits there and then sort of forms a shape, but hardly any movement. After poking around on the web, looks like it has to do with the bulb. I hope to change the bulb soon and hope it works. Any suggestions would help. I will also post a question on the forum soon.
I apologize for the confusion, I hit the wrong country selection. I too have an immense love for pre-china American lava lites, mostly because I grew up with them. In fact, my first lamp was a Midnight purple/clear which I got from Spencer's for my 8th birthday. I am still getting used to the new site and the aspect of having a profile type page. It is sort of like facebook except wonderfully lava.
Thank You for the welcome. It's good to be back after so long. This new site is incredible. It has come a long way from the good old days with the original site.
Thanks very much for the welcome! I stumbled across your website quite by accident after buying a lava lamp at a garage sale for $1 and trying to identify it online. Turns out it's a 1979 Aristocrat made by Lavalite, so my $1 was well spent. Thanks again for the welcome.

Thanks for the welcome! I am actually interested in the chemistry of the lamps - i'm an analytical chemist and you are right - the chemistry is interesting! Anyway, i am having my students analyze the components and finding none of the compounds described in the patents we have seen. It is an interesting but tough project!
Hi Jerome,
thanks for welcoming me, i am a mathmos fan, would love to get a few Crestworths in the future, and wishing i could bid on the Hunter Glitter lamp that's on uk ebay at this moment.
Haven't got a camera but wouldn't be much use anyway: all I've got right now is an empty bottle and some wax in a jam jar. I found the Molten Meditation website before yours and so started down the route of cleaning the bottle out with a view to refilling with water, washing up liquid and epsom salts. Wish I'd saved the liquid now and put it through a filter.
The lamp hadn't been used for years and I think the last time it was on, it hadn't heated fully and the initial column of wax that breaks through the upper core had stuck to the side. When I tried it at the weekend it just wouldn't work properly and the wax stuck to the side wouldn't shift.
Anyway, I've thoroughly cleaned the bottle out now but there is still a kind of oily film where the wax was stuck to the side. I'm going to use some petrol or turps to see if that will shift it before refilling and playing with epsom salts.
I'll let you know how I get on. Really want this to work as otherwise I'll have to buy a whole new lamp from Mathmos (mine is almost identical to the Astro but the base has slightly different dimensions so I'm not sure a replacement bottle would fit properly).
Btw, nice collection of lamps. What are the 3 black globes you've got, never seen those before?
Hi Jerome. Thanks for the welcome. Trying to find a way of restoring the lamp I bought about 15 years ago. It has lots of wax stuck to the sides. Going quite badly and will probably have decided to buy a new one before the end of the night. :(
Jerome - I really don't know how to use this site. Icould lose my house . . .
Can everyone read these???? Before I say anything else. Thanks for the welcome.
