"I'm honestly unsure why a 1970s lamp would begin to take much longer to heat up, using the proper 40-watt bulb. Heat rings were introduced in the late 1990s, they were never sold in the 70s, but making one out of foil is an idea."

"not recommended to go to a higher wattage.
Especially for a vintage lamp where the components can grow brittle over timeyou can try a 40-watt Halogen Reflector and more directly focus the light output,, thus giving more heat to the globe"

- My First Lava Lamp was:
- A lame one I bought from from radio shack. It had a black base and cap, clear liquid and pinkish goo. It got dropped too many times while moving and became cloudy and eventually the cap cracked. I chicked it and was lava-less for a few years. I recently purchased a pair of vintage Aristocrat lamps from ebay. Gold with holes in the base, clear liquid and red lava. The difference between true Lava lamps and the radio shack lamp is beyond words. I am hooked!
