Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I decided to test and see if a new coil in my China clear/white 52oz would fix it's issues. What do you know, it does! I thought I would share the spring type I used and some photos in case anyone out there wants to give it a go. Well worth it. My lamp actually flows now. Before, it would not attach to the spring and it would just blob up at the bottom and stay there. Even after cleaning the cheap coil inside.

Now, it's what a lava lamp should be! :D Thanks to all here for the wealth of information and knowledge. Without it, this would not have happened.

You leave about 1/4 of spring at each end unstretched. Then you squish those two ends together, interlocking them. They stay put after that. Really easy.
I'd like to try this but I have a bottle cap top. Is there an easy way to remove and replace the cap? I have a 20 or 32oz Lava purple/clear. Thanks!
You will need a capper to re-cap the bottle. There is another thread around here with all that info. Unless you are going to do several lamps every so often, the cost is not justified. They usually run $40 dollars or so.
Procedure for removing and replacing coil?

Is it:
1. Top off
2. Run until warm
3. Insert Hook and lift out coil
4. Insert new coil at base of lamp.
????
Correct. Make sure you keep the coil compressed as you pull it out, otherwise as it comes out it will spring open and fling wax and liquid all over the place. Re-cap when the lamp is cold.
Thanks for this post. I put two new coils in one of my Grandes and it is now flowing beautifully.
Glad it fixed your issue. Happy lava flowing! :D
I bought 2 lamps in the last month. 1 is a blue/white 52oz and the other is a red/yellow 52oz. Seems I'm having the same problem. The wax is just lingering at the bottom of both of them. I'm so annoyed. Is it definitely the coil? I feel like crying.
Sounds like the coil. You are better off finding a USA lamp instead of a China one. Or see DREW in the mathmos group buy thread. He has some lamps left over I think still. That would be a very sweet lamp to have. Either USA or Mathmos.
I bought the blue/white one direct from the US. The other one came from a trade fair in the UK. I don't wanna buy another lamp. I've spent a lot on these 2 with shipping! What can I do? :(
Are you in the USA or the UK or another continent?
I live in Edinburgh in Scotland.
