hi guys

 

not a lava i no, but i was wondering if anyone has tried adding a bit of movement to one of these lamps, i was thinking of somehow putting an air line into it so it brings the lamp to life a bit, any ideas would be great

Hi Chris, the floating mould is probably the remains of dead skin which the Alien baby has shed at some point while in the specimen jar.

If you remove and handle the Alien he will feel quite ridgid to the touch due to rigamortis.

The green liquid is a cryoprotectant.  Cryoprotectants are glycols (alcohols containing at least two hydroxyl groups), such as ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and glycerol. Ethylene glycol is commonly used as automobile antifreeze and propylene glycol has been used to reduce ice formation in ice cream. Mixtures of cryoprotectants have less toxicity and are more effective than single-agent cryoprotectants. Some cryoprotectants function by lowering a solution's or a material's glass transition temperature.  In this way, the cryprotectants prevent actual freezing, and the solution maintains some flexibility in a glassy phase. Many cryoprotectants also function by forming hydrogen bonds with biological molecules as water molecules are displaced. Hydrogen bonding in aqueous solutions is important for proper protein and DNA function. Thus, as the cryoprotectant replaces the water molecules, the biological material retains its native physiological structure (and function), although they are no longer immersed in an aqueous environment. This preservation strategy is most often observed when pickling Aliens.......

LMFAO !!.......sorry Chris, I just couldn't resist that one....

I haven't taken the lid off mine but TBH I think the Alien is made out of hard moulded resin and the fluid could easily be replaced with tap water and some green vegetable dye.  If you're going to empty the contents why not try a goo kit in it first ?

No probs Pete - enjoy your sense of humour although I am concerned to think that you should consider that we've been keeping our alien in subzero temperatures or otherwise in unsuitable conditions.

If anything there should be a refrigerant in the liquid, since the lamp and alien is kept in our dining room (of all places!)  However, since chlorofluorocarbons are not approved of these days due to their effects on the ozone layer, I am reduced to feeding it daily doses of dry ice to prevent the formation of excess gases.  Obviously a toxic side-effect is the shedding of cutaneous layers of it's epidermis.

I think therefore that a total removal and a wax job will sort it out - followed by reimmersion in a more convivial medium, e.g, whiskey.

On the other hand a goo kit might be a lot simpler........!

While on the subject of these alien lamps, ours (picked up at a boot sale last month for £3) has what looks like some mould floating in the liquid. It clings onto the alien, making him look even more dead than usual!

I've never taken one of these apart before but this one needs a clean-out.  Logically therefore, we'll have to empty out the liquid, wash the alien and then replace it and refill the bottle.

So - please can someone tell me, is the alien made of firm enough plastic(?) to withstand washing?

And can you also tell me what the liquid is?  Is it just coloured water or is it something special?

Snapping some very quick and basically rubbish photos just now it was apparent that the mould would appear to emanate from the aliens nether regions - although whether or not it's from the front or rear isn't clear.It does produce a deja vu of some underwater porn movies. "Shouldn't 'a said tha'," to quote Hagrid....!
