Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I noticed Mathmos were out of stock of the Green Fluidium, so I e-mailed them about it. They said it had been discontinued, but they had Yellow ones for sale. My guess would be when the Yellow ones have gone, that will be it.

I managed to get one from here:http://www.sweatband.com/mathmos-fluidium.html.

Hurry while stocks last.

I wanted to see if they would accept USA shipping information. I got a confirmation email for an order I made with bogus info. It took my address but put united kingdom at the bottom. Oh well...

Thanks for the heads up Shacky.

Autumn, did you ever hear back from them about US shipping?

Nope. They never said a word.
Hi, the fluidium was, in my opinion, the most ugly, poorly designed and cheap and nasty as hell looking lamp.
Good riddance I say.
Let's hope for new lamps, especially with the fiftieth anniversary coming up.
And let's get back to basics, metal and glass.
Plastic is soooooo cheap looking.
I bought a green one to make up my collection and I wished I'd never bothered.
Tacky, tacky, tacky.
One could never be proud of such a snot green monstrosity.
Discuss, lol......
I disagree I mean yes some may see the plastic design as cheap and nasty but I don't think so. - Its good quality plastic, is well made (like all Mathmos lamps) and the sculpting on the base and cap would be hard to make out of metal and if so i don't think it would look as good.

As for the globe I really like the shape and curves on it - it looks a lot more softer then the astro and the baby astro's.

The only thing which could be improved is the warm up time.

However that's my view and i can understand why some may not agree with me.

Wazzer is you don't want you green fludium and are considering selling - i am interested (PM me).

What bulbs do you need - if its the halagon ones then you would be ok but for the tungston ones I would say stock pile them before the prices go up.

You can still get tungston bulbs for lava lamps esaley.

I need bulbs.... i hope they will continue to make those at least. I love my fluidiums...
Like all objects in life, the Fluidium serves an asthetic as well as a functional role. From a design point of view, it is simply an object of beauty and desire in my opinion........designed by non other than Ross Lovegrove, international industrial multi award winner, most famous for his design work for Sony walkman, Apple Computers and collaboration with other world famous designers in consultation for other world famous brand names etc.  It is unfortunate that the materials used in its manufacture "look" like cheap plastic.  In fact, the base and cap are made from Polycarbonate, the most versatile and tough form of plastic available which is also used in a variety of applications including bullet proof glass.  This plasic is far more durable than metal and as Tim points out, it would be practically impossible to manufacture this shape in aluminium.  The bottle is also made out of soda glass.  Mathmos's brief to Lovegrove which lay behind his inspiration in the design of this lamp was to showcase the wonderful flow and organic forms within a new kind of lamp unlike anything the world had seen before........and I think he nailed it !
Thanks for the heads up, I'd better get a yellow one soon.
