Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Like so many others, I too have a cloudy Grande. I knew that's what I was buying when I found it on eBay though. It was $50 shipped.

I waited about two days before I dumped it. I did attempt to run it once last night, but since I couldn't really see the lava, I can only assume this thing had some sort of aneurysm by the looks of it today:

Seriously, it actually kinda grossed me out:

Another gross shot:

I followed Shawn's lovely tutorial for Goo-Kitting and only spilled twice. ;)

Blue duct tape!

Clean globe, with 60s Century on in the background for inspiration:   :)

And blah, blah, blah, now I'm waiting for its first run!

My plans are to dye the liquid (water) green, paint the base a muted copper and drill holes in it like a Century.

More news as I progress! Can't wait to see this running.

Well after 6+ hours, we have no lava movement. I have this on a 75W bulb and it's been turned on since 10:30pm last night. We have the A/C on and it's about 78 in here. Any ideas? :( I'm bummed!

Sounds like its way too cold Erin. Can you post pics of it now so I can see? and is it still on? First runs will take a good 8-10 hours to see it flowing. I would put a 100 watt bulb on it and get it away from the air conditioner too. DO NOT use salt or dish soap on the gookit.

I am agreeing with Dr What - it needs a 100w bulb and ideally on a dimmer, as for adding salt and soap - don't go there with gookits, if you have followed the instructions and guides the gookit formula works fine.

I have to say well done for gookiting a granda. - I would love to but the cost of shipping goo to the UK is quite expensive and added to the cost of the lamp would mean a expensive project.

Found some 100W bulbs at Lowe's (they had 150W and 200W, too) and bought an 8-pack for $2.50. Just put the 100W in now at 3:30pm. We'll see what happens.

Tim, even in the US, this was an expensive project, so I can only imagine that making one in the UK would be even more expensive. The Grande was $50 shipped (lucky find on eBay) and the GooKit was about $50 shipped. So this is about a $100 project.

The wax was fully melted before I shut it off around 11:30am. The only thing in the globe is GooKit wax, distilled water and GooKit surfactant.

I'll keep everyone posted! Fingers crossed. :)

What kind of 100 watt bulbs did you get where you can get 8 for $2.50?

Still no lava flow and we're 2.5 hours in.

So you are using a 100 watt incandescent.  Try a 100 watt spot - LIKE THIS (click me, I'm porn)

Yes, I'm using 100W incandescent. I'll have to look for 100W flood. How much hotter are they?

This is where I'm at, about 3 hours in:

The 100 watt R20 will have you flowing in no time.  It will most likely run too hot though so you will need a dimmer.  100 watt is perfect for a Giant, too hot for a Grande and also too hot for a Goo kit.

Its getting there Erin be patient ;)

It's been THREE HOURS!!! I have lava boob!

I can tell all the heat is at the bottom of the base, not near the lava.
