Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hi there,

just received my Lunar frow Switzerland :-)

I've been told the bottle is tired, but I can't even try it yet because seller didn't include bulb.

(anyway I'll have to change the swiss connector to a euro one).

Could you tell me exactly what bulb I'm supposed to buy (a reference will be great!)

Another thing: I can't manage to remove the conic cap from the bottle. Is there a special technic?

I don't want to ruin it.

Any advice welcome.

Thanks!

PS: I don't have the red mathmos sticker on the cap is it normal?

I just have a sticker on one leg:

Man, I tried everything.

As I can't turn the cone from the bottle, and the tip is still screwed to the threaded bar (but turning loose now), I guess precedent owner did push down the cone, then screwed the tip at the maximum.

That's why I don't see another option than breaking the bottle. That will be fun :-(

But before going this way, I have contacted the seller to send back the Lunar, or to get a partial refund, so I can get a new bottle from Mathmos.

I paid with Paypal, so even if the seller is not correct with me, I hope I could get something from them.

what did you pay for it?

The metal cap with the threaded bar on mine looks like it was originally glued to the black bottle cap. But when I brought it, it was attached to the inside of the cone with the bullet tip so when I change bottles I just lift the cone off with everything attached and just locate the metal cap over the other bottle black cap. I can unscrew the bullet tip to remove the metal cap with the threaded bar from inside the cone when polishing the cone and bullet tip.

Yes Bill, it is indeed glued to the bottle cap.

I called Mathmos today, and they told me so.

They don't see a better option than breaking the bottle, except trying to gently hit the cone with a rubber hammer.

I will try that at last resort.

Krissy, I paid 450eur including shipping.

That was a correct price if I just had to filter it.

But I find it expensive now because of the cone problem and the dead bottle.

Seller doesn't want me to return it, or to refund me partialy, so I'll wait for Paypal...

By the way, for your information:

Mathmos confirm me the Lunar bottle is indeed a normal whisky bottle (4.5l) and not tempered glass.

A lot of people here know that already, but it's good to have an official confirmation :-)

Today I tried rubber hammer, vapor, wd40, and finaly broke the bottle (and cut one finger in the process ;-) ).

Bottle was glued with a very strong silicon (I can't still remove all of it). So it was not a problem with the tip after all.

Cap as a lot of small scratches and bumps, and right now, all I've got is a MiniLunar :-(

PS: If you've got a nice cone for sale, contact me.

Thanks.

Well done for getting the cone off, i would suggest getting some silicone remover from a DIY shop to remove the rest of the silicon.

You could sell the old bottle on Ebay for parts etc, you may get a fue bucks for it that could then be put towards a new lunar bottle. - Mathmos do off the shelf vilote / red ones for £69 or custom bottles (I don't know the pricing of these).

my advice is to get a new (filled) bottle from Mathmos or you could find the whisky bottle and do and transfer with it or a goo kit. However I don't know how well it might work as the glass isn't tempered so its a bit risky.

Tim,

I may have not written it right (I'm french) but:

No more bottle, as I was obliged to brake it. Everything else had failed :-(

About the whisky bottle, as I said before: Mathmos confirm me that it is regular bottle, not tempered, so I think I'll give it a try.

Hi Astralav, sorry to hear you had to resort to breaking your Lunar bottle. Have you managed to remove the metal cap from the black bottle cap? I have used a hair dryer in the past to remove the caps on jet/astro baby and astro bottles. I see that you tried this with no luck, only my metal cap was only glued to the top and not around the out side of the black bottle cap. Was wondering if the previous owner had used the silicon to secure the metal cap to the black bottle cap. Only I would have thought that Mathmos would have used the same glue that they use to seal all their other caps with.

Hi Bill,

There wasn't a metal cap or threaded bar finally. (the tip was fixed on a screw, that's why it was turning freely).

The problem was the (very strong) silicon which was all around between the base of the cone and the bottle.

A very bad idea from past owner, who partially ruined my joy to finally get a Lunar :-(

I hope I'll find someone to restore my cone in good shape (or a good second hand one).

I'm not too worry about the bottle. If I get a refund I'll order one from Mathmos, otherwise I'll go whisky bottle+goo kit.

Mathmos glue there caps on with silicone - this loosens with hot water and that way you can get any cap off.

As for the lunar - Mathmos don't glue there cones on only the bottle tops

I don't think the previous owner knew how to handle a lunar very well and as a result you kinda got ripped off.

Cone wise - contact car bodyshop people and see what they can do - if its way too bad then you could consider filling it and flocking it (someone on hear has done that).

Bottle wise its achulie surprisingly cheep - I think you will have to pay around 60-70 quid for a new bottle but considering I paid more for all my goo kit stuff (1X gookit and extra quart of goo + surf and all dyes) then it could be cheaper to get a off the shelf Mathmos bottle.

The silicon (silly cone?) which was on the cone didn't came off with hot vapor or hairdryer.

Pretty strong stuff!

I don't want a violet/red bottle, so if I order from mathmos, it will be custom = £120 (more to France)

Too bad the original is dead because it was a really deep orange, beautifull!

The cone is not a disaster and I hope to find someone to fix it.

Right now, it is just a big let down as this lamp was supposed to be my birthday present, and it gave me troubles for days.

But I'm sure I'll fix it and be happy later, but right now it is a bit hard to swallow.
