Bridget, ive had this prob with a lamp before. while its hot carefully take off the bace and swirl it gently back and forth till it resticks to the coil. it works but may have to be repeated from time to time.

Ok, so on the left is the well behaved, perfectly flowing purple neon (I love that it snakes). On the right, is the rather boring green one that is pretty but is lazy.
I've tried the jiggle (properly) and it doesn't help. However, while looking at it I noticed the green one is only sticking to 1/2 the coil, while the purple is stuck to the entire coil. I have a suspicion this might be the problem between the two.
Any ideas on how to get lava to stick to the coil w/o opening the lamp?
Still, 2 out of 3 new ones working well (see black/orange thread) makes me very happy.
Bridget, did this work for you?
I just bought a purple Neon that is having this problem.

Unfortunately that only worked for my lamp for about 1hr at a time. Of course, the lava was not sticking to at least 1/2 if not 3/4 of the coil, so it may have been too bad to work.
I bought a new one and am debating whether to return the original one or try to futz with it. At their low cost, I'm not convinced returning it is worth the time.
On the plus, all the Spencer's I've bought from have been happy to open the package and let me examine the lamp (clarity, and now coil coverage) before I buy.
Bummer.
It's a shame. My green one flows great but is a tad cloudy. The purple one is crystal clear, but doesn't flow right.
I can't win...
Yeah, I had the salesperson take the newest 2 I bought all the way out of the packaging just to hedge my bets.
If I end up opening my green one, I'll let you know if I manage to improve it at all.
sometimes my green neon has trouble sticking to the coil, and the lava flows along the side of the globe. when this happens, i gently invert the globe to get the coil to re-attach to the lava. also, sometime during warm-up, the lava and coil become perpendicular to the base of the lamp, which does not allow the lava to heat properly. i'm hoping the issues i'm having are just because the lamp is relatively new.
I wasn't sure what Spensers would consider as "defective" (my lamp did turn on and the lava did somewhat move), so I was a little hesitant to take it back. But they had no issue with my exchange. Ran the new one last night and it was flowing really well (once it got going).
So, next question: Anyone seen any Yellow Neons since the "recall"? I've only seen the green an purple in stores. If the yellow ones are out there, how are they?
i was not aware of a recall on the yellow neons. maybe that's why i didn't see any at the local spencer's? by chance, do you have a thread to reference for this recall? thanks.
I was referring to when Spensers pulled the original batch of Neons from shelves due to so many of them being cloudy. Someone here called it a "voluntary recall" IIRC. This affected all colors of the Neons. I just asked about the yellow ones as I read someone else saying that since the Neons have been back in stock they have not seen yellow ones. I haven't seen them either.
Here ya go ;)

ah, thanks! my local spencer's only carries the green and purple 52oz. neons. i would love to get my hands on a yellow neon!
I got lucky, my spencer's had a yellow. It was what I would call lightly cloudy and I bought it expecting to have to filter it in the future. They actually had two, and I got the least cloudy one.
I have two other lamps that are also lightly cloudy, so I'm thinking a filter would not be a bad investment anyway. The lava addiction has only been dormant, and since it has reawakened I don't think it's going back to sleep anytime soon. Of course, I also want grandes so figure if I'm prepared, I'll end up with clear ones.
