Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

New here...questions about how to tell the age of globes?

Hello, all. New guy here who has liked Lava Lamps ever since I first saw one as a kid in the 70's. I've had a few in the past but I happened into a antique shop over the weekend and saw something that I had never seen before and absolutely had to have. A deal was struck with the proprietor and out I strolled with my new toy, rolling the dice on if it worked or not. (It turned out that it just needed a new bulb) I determined after looking on the internet, including this very cool site, that my acquisition is none other than a Coach Lantern Lava Lamp! Now it seems that there is a bit of confusion on how many variations there are and as soon as I am able to get some decent pictures, I will post them.

What I am most curious about is the globe. How does one tell how old the globe is and if it's original to the lamp? My globe is in great shape and I'm pretty certain it's original to the lamp but are there ways to tell for sure? It has crystal clear liquid, not foggy at all, that is just slightly "off-color" so-to-speak which lends it an vintage look. The lava is not the usual 70's blood red variety though. It is red, slightly pink/purplish when at rest and looks more red when heated. It's a beautiful lamp and I dig the heck out of it but I'd love to know if the globe is as original as the base clearly is. The globe also has a lot of tiny bubbles in the glass, not sure if that would help or not.

I hope to get some pictures soon but so far I've had trouble taking pictures that actually look like the lamp looks in person. Hopefully you good folks will help shed some light on my newest gem which seems like it's a pretty rare item.

Thanks very much!

Welcome!  Check out this article in the Lava Library:

Basically if it has a screw cap it was made before the mid nineties.  If it has a bottle cap it should have the date stamped on it.

Fantastic, October 1973! Thanks very much, Keith!

Now to find more about the base and lava color...
