Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hey guys! New member here! Got a couple questions I know will probably be easy answers for some of you...

I am in the market for a new lava lamp for my studio apartment (the first of many). I had the lava bug back in the early 90s and had a midnight series, black base, clear liquid and purple wax as my first lamp. Had a few here and there back then but had all but forgotten about them until I started watching re-runs of "That 70s Show", and now I absolutely have to have another one!

Now, Im not the type to just go out and bu the first thing I see at target or walmart, I always research purchases like this, and it is looking like I may have been smart in doing this... Lava Lite seems to have gotten really bad since the 90s by looking at the posts here and in various reviews around the internet.

I have found numerous posts here referring to production being moved back into the US here but the main source of this information was from last year. Has this move happened? Are the Lava Lite lamps sold at target and walmart back up to par with what they should be now? Are the forumlas perfect for good flow again?

Second, I just found out about Mathmos the other day and got all excited. This excitment quickly left me when I found Mathmos's US site with no listing for the Astro that is oh-so-drool worthy... What is going on there? Are they going to produce the Astro for the US market here or what? I would much rather save my pennies for a perfect Mathmos then play the gambling game with a target bought lamp...

Thanks in advance! This is a wonderful site and I look forward to this new interest becoming an obsession ;)

So Spencers had a decent display of all the neons but severely lacked in the other sizes and variants, with only 4 others on display.

I have been lurking here and doing massive amounts of reading and research on lamps these past few days. I have decided on a neon 52 oz in purple from Spencers. Purple as a tribute to the old Midnight I had in the 90s, and after learning that the "original" lava lamp from back in the day was a Century with the 52oz bottle, it is also, in my mind, kind of a tribute to the original size and shape! I dont know how Lava Lite calls their 14" tall 20oz "Classic" line "Classic"....

Also, I dont know if this is the right place to ask this... Im sure there are, but is there anyone with an Astro as well as the 20oz, 32oz, 52oz Lava Lites that could put them side by side for a size comprison picture for me? I have found pictures showing all of the Lava Lite sizes but never with a standard Astro mixed in. If possible, throw in an original Century or Aristrocrat for good measure because I want to see how they evolved into the current 520z models ;)

Thanks again! I love this place!

Spencer's does need new shipments but some of the lamps are going out but their website has tons of lava lamps

An astro is the same size as a 52 oz lava lite lamp.

found this picture after some digging... from user here, "Brad":

52oz goo kit (red)
32oz midnight blue/white (8403, yr. 2000)
52oz neon
blue/blue astro
violet/white astro

would be interesting to see the enchantress and aristocrat int his lineup just to see the subtle base differences too though :)

THe first 52 oz. Is an aristocrat isn't it

another view showing the first 52oz better: http://oozinggoo.ning.com/photo/dsc-0062

also, correct me if im wrong, but the 32oz should look almost exactly the same as the original enchantress, right?

so, from the looks of the picture, the new neons (and the rest of the current 52oz line) use a base extremely similar to the original aristocrats... now all thats missing is a century from the pic haha

In the beginning of the month in the lot i am buying from Autumn i am getting an aristocrat and a century along with a few others

Yes it does look great

thanks for the shout-out, jamie.  yes, the neon base is similar to an aristocrat base, just minus the pinholes.  some members here drill them and they look great!  erin and metallica man have photos of this modification.

Update:
I got a neon purple 52oz from Spencers last night. I got it home and it was kinda cloudy. I  ran it for 6 1/2 hours... It took 4 to get it to actually do anything at all and when it was "flowing" it would just create one giant glob that went slowly from the top to the bottom. I ran it again this morning for 5 1/2 hours with the same results. I will probably be exchanging this one tomorrow for another one but I will be opening the next one in store to check for a clear globe. The examples of globes on these that I have seen here look CRYSTAL clear... Mine right now is like someone added a teaspoon of milk....

The cap code is:

H5109
12121201
D1

replace it. Do know however that new lamps have a break in period out about 10 runs and until then they will flow like crap.
