Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Is it just me and my OCD, or has everyone noticed that Wizard caps are different sizes?   I have black and silver bases/caps, and some caps are longer than others in both colors.  I also have a red Wizzie base/cap (thanks Erin), which has the short cap on it.  The light metallic blue cap is an unknown entity, since I only have the base so far (thanks Kirk).   Why did LL do that?   The longer caps are better at hiding low fluid levels, if you have that problem, but why make two sizes at all?   After heating up, the fluid level, unless really low, doesn't matter, it expands and the cap hides it anyway.

On another note, if anyone has extra long black cap, long silver cap, or a cap for the light metallic blue base that doesn't look like a tree shredder has gnawed upon them, I need all three.  I have one mismatched base/cap I bought "as is," just for the Pink Wizard globe it had on it.   I wanted the globe, so tempered my OCD to get it.

One of my Wizards is also crying for the dark royal blue base/cap.  I had no idea until looking at the pics here, that blue bases/caps came in two different shades of blue.   Thanks everyone, for any help with either the question about cap sizes,  or any of the extra caps or dark blue base/cap named above that you are willing to part with.  I pay "instantly" BTW, if the price is right of course!   :-)

I know they used similar caps for the rocket lamps which tend to look the same but be shorter then wizards caps.

My guess would be the longer caps are for glitter globes since there is quite a bit of air space when cool.

I didn't think of that, thanks, Doc!!   They must have used the same mold as the Starships, but cut the moon and stars around the base of the caps too.   The Silver SS has no cutouts, but the black SS has round ones.  But you're right, all are the shorter caps.

Thanks, Keith.  I do know that the longer caps do look better when some fluid is lost in the Wizards.  But when running, you don't notice low fluid, unless it's excessive, since the fluid expands and is then covered by the cap.

LOL - glad I'm not the only one noticing these variations! You want to talk about OCD, I actually measured the diference between the long wizard, short wizard and midnight starship caps: long wizard is aprox. 4.5 inches, short wizard is approx. 3.5 inches, and midnight starship is approx. 3.875 inches. There are also two slightly different hole patterns on the midnight starship caps:

Finally, I just found out there are also two slightly different arrangments in the spacing of the legs on the midnight starships; on one, the legs are approx. 7.5 inches apart at the base, and on another they are approx. 8.5 inches apart, resulting in approx. 0.5 inch difference in height. I only found this out because I was trying to cram two of them in the same height space, and only one of them fit!

Maybe the lava historians here can chime in at some point...

Good Grief, Rob, I thought  I was the only one noticing these things. It appears your OCD is as bad as mine. LOL  Let's just say we're perfectionists.  I just got a Midnight Starship today, and now I'm gonna have to measure the legs to see which one I have.  Thanks..... :-)   (And check the holes in the cap....eeekkk)   I just checked the cap, the holes on my cap are completely round, not slightly oblong as in your first pic.   Sorry, I flung your OCD on you......Hahahaha   But at least I have company!

I need a wizard cap any condition because i am painting it anyway and i understand the ocd part but lets call it perfectionism because i am a perfectionist

U all are odd.....;-)

WE have to do something with our lives

i have a light turquoise base that came with a dark blue cap. seller said it was bought new like that. was going to paint it but if it is infact original i may just leave it alone lol. also (as others have said), the cheap china glitter caps work perfect for replacement wiz caps. no moons n stars but that are plenty long enough.

Lala, don't do anything to your mis-matched cap and base, they are the real deal.   The blue Wizzie did come in two colors of blue.   The light blue metallic and the darker royal-like blue.

Trev, yep, I know I'm very picky......LOL    So is Rob C. and that's a good thing........  :-)

Seems there was a debate here once on that subject. If there were actually 2 blues or just variations of blue. (not counting the turquoise of course) I have both and there is a definite difference in color. Subtle but different.

And one of the first things I learned here as a newb was Wiz cap differences. Doodad was the one who pointed it out to me as we browsed eBay. He used to say to me, "So... how shall we spend your money today? " XD
