Im really not sure LOL . I used some colorant i had from a long time ago for candles . its called 'teal' its in a hard wax form that you have to 'chip' out little bits . Im so totally thrilled with it ! I was getting on so tired of YELLOW wax , its in so many lamps ! This was one of those that has a translucent paint job on the outside of the globe . Red on top and clear and green on bottom . the wax appeared to be changing color as it traveled the length of the globe . It was kinda tacky , so i cleaned it all off and got what you see in the pic above . then decided to do a total makeover ! Taaa Daaa !!
I still don't understand how the color is changing, but it's great!

I've seen lamps do that before and I've never understood it either. I had a Chinese glitter that did the same thing - one color on the bottom, another on the top.
I didnt even use anything way fancy . just some old colorant for gel wax . I may be onto something though . I am thinking about trying to make a 'gel wax' lava lamp . I have been reading up on how the lava is made . The gel wax melts at a higher temp so i may have to make a mixture of paraffin and gel .
