Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

So I just returned from another business trip to London and I again was able to order a couple Astros. Now I have the complete Heritage line as well as the classic Astro (in the new chrome finish). I have a photo of the boxes in my photo collection.

Interesting thing is that the Heritage line uses the golfball shaped incandescent bulbs but the chrome Astro has what appears to be a halogen reflector bulb. I planned on changing out the socket and cord like I have done on one of my other Heritage lamps rather than using voltage converters or 110v versions of the bulbs. I am a little taken back by the use of the Halogen lamp though. I think they are 35W 220V bulbs in the Chrome Astro.

Wondering if anyone has converted a chrome Astro? Now I understand why the globes on the Mathmos website are listed as not interchangeable between Heritage and Classic. I imagine the Heritage would overheat with a halogen? Curious...

Nice Astros Chuck! I would imagine it is similar to how the 32oz Lava Clearviews running a 25w reflector compared the the standard 32oz lamps running a 40w incandescent. When I put the Clearview globe on a 40w midnight base it is full flow in under an hour, wax is in smaller ball forms and they stay at the top showing too hot, haha.

I recently received a pink Astro myself, up converting the voltage to run the SES 40w golfball. One of the best flowing lamps I own, love how the cold wax is a purple hue and then ignites into an almost day-glow pink when on! I am not familiar with the conversion as I wanted to keep it authentic to the build.

I have the Telstar with the pink wax and it looks good so I imagine it will be great in the Astro!

You should be very pleased! Mine is an older Astro, 90's or early 2000 I believe, and it is beautiful! I wish they were easier to accuire as I would probably get another so the one I have has a flank mate ;)

If you go back over there for any reason and need a reason to smuggle another one back, let me know. I will happily fill that suitcase with one and trade you money for it!
