(Lava Chat) |
This lamp had me going since the day I got it!!! It used to be black lava/clear fluid. On sale at kmart for 8.79. Boring flow. The black lava reminded me of an 8-ball flowing up, then down, then up, then down.....you get the picture. Then if that wasn't enough, after a few runs, it hazed up for no apparent reason. Never shook, never overheated. So I kitted it after my violet. Used a little different technique. I did not know how much wax to use for this one. I figured if you use 225 for a 52 oz, and a 20 oz is less then half of a 52....hummm... so I weighed out 100 grams of wax, melted it down, colored it in the pan, and poured it. After pouring it, I looked at the globe and it did look about the right amount of wax from memory. The flow has gotten better, more active, but I know that the 20 oz globes just don't have the flow like the larger globes. I guess not much room in them. I also put a 40 watt bulb in from a 25 and am using a dimmer. This allows me to let it be a bit more active without overheating. The little speck of red dye I added made it look more of an orange to me then a red. I was happy with that because I kind of like orange anyway.
So, in conclusion for anyone kitting a 20 oz, if you want to weigh the wax, I had luck with the 100 grams. Not much snake and column flow with this globe, but I think it's the globe not so much the goo itself.
