Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hi All,

just curious if anyone has bought a Mathmos Astro Metallic Lava Lamp?  I’m considering buying one with tax refund in a month or so but I am not sure if I will like it.  Does it really look like these pics I’ve attached?  Any info or input is welcomed and appreciated!

Yes they look like the pics you attached.  I have two and really like them, but I could see where they might not be for everyone.  They are best run and enjoyed in a darker room.

Thanks for your response! That is a very nice looking lamp. The chrome/metallic/mirror like look of the lamp when it is off is actually really cool to me. My concern is what it looks like when it is flowing.  Yours looks like liquid metal in the globe or almost like actual lava haha, very cool video! Do you ever have any problems with seeing inside the globe when it is running from any angle, it just seems as if it may have a glare or reflection that could distort the view into the globe?  Do you have any pictures of the lamp in at night?  These are really cool looking either way!

Thank you!

Dustin

Yes, when running the lamp the mirror surface does create some internal reflections of the lava and fluid. That’s the appeal!  It does not become crystal clear when you turn it on.  The video shows exactly how they look when flowing.  I absolutely love the affect of the mirrored globe but as I said earlier it is not for everyone and I do know some collectors who dislike these.  You may wish to stick to clear glass if you want unobstructed views of the inside of the globe.

Hi Critter, this is the best description of the lamp I have ever heard and I agree with you that the mirroring during operation is not for everyone.

I think it looks really neat. To me it almost looks as if the exterior  glass of the globe are a screen and the lava inside is being projected onto the bottle.  Almost looks like a 3D effect. It’s cool.

I personally think that no lamp collection would be complete without at least one of these on hand.  I have a red and a blue, the yellow came out after the initial release of the red and blue and I have not picked it up yet but I think it is gorgeous too.  The internal mirroring that occurs adds a whole new layer of movement and it is very much like 3D as you mention.

An important thing to note is that the mirror coating is easy to damage and requires one to be careful when handling.  Never twist the top chrome cap around while it is sitting on the bottle!  I have had mine since the first release and have not suffered any damage due to being careful.  However, I have seen some where damage occurred and it definitely takes away from the lamp when it happens.

Thank you so much Critter!  It is definitely good to know that I need to use extreme caution while handling it.  This is why I like to ask the OG community about lava lamps before I purchase them. Invaluable information. Thank you. It sounds like those who have one of these can’t say enough about how much they enjoy them.  So I think that I would like to get one of these.  Do you have any photos of your blue one?  I’d like to see actual photos of all of the colors.  I know they have pics on the Mathmos website but of course those are obviously going to look cool.  If you or anybody else wants to share photos of the Metallic Astro, please do!  Thanks again, Critter!

Dustin.

I will have to fire up my blue one and get a pic. I will try to do that tonight.

Ok, great!  Thank you!  I look forward to it.  If possible, a video would be phenomenal!  I’ll check back here after work tonight. Thanks!
