I just got 5 "new" 32 oz globes from the mid-90's.
1 - 05 white/orange
1 - 02 red/yellow
1 - 17 teal/clear
2 - 16 black/clear
$30 total from craigslist (plus gas and dinner) ;)
I tried out 3 of them last night, the teal works beautiful, one of the blacks works great, but the inside of the globe is cloudy (not the water), the orange has a coil problem, but is a wonderful color!
I would have been happy with just more common colors at that price, but these colors are great! I have been wanting a teal ever since I realized that there was such a color, same thing with the orange. And recently the blacks have piqued my interest. And there is always room for a red. Now I just have to decide which of my display globes will get to rest!
You just have to be patient, and willing to take a risk. The orange/white globe, the wax does not stick to the coil. So I will probably have to uncap and change the coil. But I still got a great deal!
***UPDATE***
OK, I have tested all of these globes and here are the results:
05 white/orange - wax does not stick to the coil
02 red/yellow - coil is in a "figure 8" !?! = does not flow right
17 teal/clear - perfect!
16 black/clear - flows great, but both get too hot, needs to be ran on dimmers
also picked up a complete 32 oz. lamp at a local Salvation Army store. It has a #24 cap, but it is a white/orange combo. It may be someones failed project lamp - the cap is corroded underneath and leaks, and the coil is corroded. there is also a lot of junk in the lava. But for $4.00 it will be good for projects!
