An idea could be to take the stopper out and put some silicone around it to get it to the required size and then once completely dry put the stopper back in - this could work.

The other option would be to put silicone over the stopper to completely seal it up.

If you do it neat and tidy then it wouldn't be to much of a bodge.

Do not try to apply silicone & insert it into the plexiglass end right away! The chemicals inside will eat it away. Do as Tim instructed & maybe you'll have better luck than the rest of us.

You could also try to find a rubber stopper at a hardware, pool supply place. Just seal the hole with plastic wrap & take the old one with you & match it up. Good luck!

I'd advise something on the outside. The stoppers were originally installed with some sort of special process, and even one I had that broke completely, the stopper (which had cracks around it) still took excessive force to remove.
why not put a thin layer of 2 step epoxy over it. The stuff is indestructible. It might work just an idea.
Epoxy will dry out the rubber stopper, in theory. But worth a try!
