Why only 8 hours?

Hi. Just got a lava lamp for Christmas and I noticed that the instructions say you should have it turned on for only 8 hours.

Can anyone here give me more info on that? Typically, fo most of you leave yours on only for that amount of time? Or do some if you leave it on all the time? Is it unsafe to leave on for more than 8 hours? Why the time limit?

I didn't know until visiting this site that there were different kinds of lava lamps.

Mine looks like the basic style, with silver-toned metal and purple liquid with red goo.

A dimmer, eh? Do they make those for switches that are on the power cord?
