I'm thinking of rebuilding two Grande lava lamps that don't flow, I suspect they are from China. But I'm not terribly eager to spend the $179 USD (incl $47 shipping) that it will cost me to buy two…Continue

How long does your goo-kitted Grande take before it flows?

I hear that the goo kits start flowing faster and require less heat. Can anyone elaborate? How long does a normal Grande take before it flows VS a goo-kit Grande? Is it noticably faster? Also, if you…Continue

Hi guys,I have two 32 oz lava lamps that have been running 8-12 hours a day for over 20 years. They still flow great, but their age is starting to show: they need a bit more water, and the wax is…Continue

"Adding more surf (i.e. soap) wouldn't be a good idea adding Epson salts or propain glycerol would work to agust the density of the water and get the lamp flowing. check out this thread for a rough overview…"

"So the dye worked perfectly, but I also topped off the globes with distilled water, quite a bit had evaporated over the past 25 years (maybe an inch worth). Unfortunately, as I feared, that changed the chemistry of these globes and they don't…"

"Hi all, an update: I got candle wax dye from a Canadian retailer, it was $3.99 for a small bottle. I got one red and one blue for my two lava lamps that are 20-25 years old. It worked perfectly! Below are some pictures. Here's me adding to…"

Grande rebuild and Gookit.com

I'm thinking of rebuilding two Grande lava lamps that don't flow, I suspect they are from China. But I'm not terribly eager to spend the $179 USD (incl $47 shipping) that it will cost me to buy two Goo kits from gookits.com... the price is a bit much... at that price I need assurance that they'd work well and it would be relatively easy to do - getting the sealed lids off and back on concerns me most. Some questions if you guys don't mind:1. Is there a cheaper solution? Are these the only guys…See More

"You can buy candle wax dye at any well-stocked craft/hobby store. They often come in cakes that break into smaller portions. You can make small slivers of this dye and when a blob of hot wax makes it to the top of your lamp you can add small pieces…"

"Check VOXul's stuff, http://oozinggoo.ning.com/profile/NickM278 But basically just adding to the wax as it is running is what I would do, especially if I used a liquid dye.  I would put a drop in the wax that collects at the top and…"

Keith replied to Michael's discussion How long does your goo-kitted Grande take before it flows?

Michael replied to Michael's discussion How long does your goo-kitted Grande take before it flows?
"Just a ballpark answer would do, would you say they start flowing an hour earlier? Two hours earlier? Do you use 100w bulbs? Do you dim them once it starts flowing? etc etc "
