Bubbly lava?

I've been reading through this site - it's a great place for information. I'm also getting a lot of answers to my questions. Thank you!

I notice that a lot of the new lava lamps seem to have bubbles in the lava. Remembering some of the old ones, like my grandmother's, I seem to recall that they were more "soild" in appearance. This could just be faulty memory, however.

Are the new lamps generally more bubbly? I'm guessing that it's trapped fluid within the lava that creates the bubbles?

What do you prefer - bubbles or no bubbles?

I prefer no bubbles. Like you said, the older lamps have a more solid look. The wax was opaque, the new lamps are quite translucent, especially when new. However, older lamps have the bubbles also. The one I had in the 70's had a lot of them. I have a different one from the 70's now that doesn't seem to have any bubbles. The lamps have individual characteristics, and that is one of them.
