Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Can you identify this Glitter lamp? and solve the cloudy glass..

Hello Goo Heads!

I am a newbie here and I wanted to get your expertise and any suggestions. I got this cool retro looking glitter lamp from my significant other as a Valentine's gift! But it needs work, particularly the cloudy glass. It looks to be residue from the liquid which has been sitting still for awhile. As you can see, it was stored horizontally, as you can see the glass is clear where no liquid at the top. Any idea what type of lamp? Circa? It would be cool to find out..! Thanks so much!

Any way you could post the pics themselves? This Wii won't open those links. Promise I wouldn't ask, if I didn't think there's a chance you may have one like I do-and I did fix it!

What a messy desk!

Good job! It's similar, the glitter definitely looks the same.
Well-I'll jus tell you what I did to mine. I opened it, and poured it all into a clean container. I used a bottle brush to scrub the inside real good. Mine had been super dark, and I noticed there was specks all in the liquid which looked like coffee grounds-so I jus filtered the liquid through a paper towel. Then, I put all the glitter and gak collected on the paper towel into a fine kitchen strainer. I rinsed until the dark specks were gone...then I actually had to bleach the glitter cuz it was so dark. Rinsed again, and put the glitter back in. That wasn't the end for me, but it seems way more than you need to do. I wouldn't fear opening it to clean the inside though!

Hey Thanks for the quick reply Jus! Did you get a foul odor when you opened it? How did you close the top back up? Do you have any idea what year, make this may be from? Will try to open, dump and clean it out.. :)

I am kinda new to this myself, and don't even know about mine! Our bottles look alike...I had such trouble opening mine that finally I jus hammered a nail through the center of the cap. Which broke the bottle a bit...luckily just the edge. The member here named Autumn had a very helpful post about resealing broken bottles. I tried it and it has worked perfectly! I don't know how to post links for you to find it...try searching this site for "marine epoxy", or also Autumn's page has her posts all listed. But definitely, the difference was marine epoxy to get a serious seal.
PS-might not rush into that closing, till you're for sure happy with everything....
Oops...smell...I do recall the smell was of chemicals, so I tried to avoid further smelling it to figure out what it was. It wasn't bad tho...

Good luck!

Thanks Jus for your feedback!

This looks to be a China-made glitter lamp and one from the late 90s or early 2000s. It looks like the glitter is a little disintegrated and the clouding could be from laying on its side.

The older US-made Lava Lite glitters and glitter lamps from the 70s are indeed very toxic. Do not open them indoors. This one shouldn't be too bad.

I would just dump, clean and refill with something else unless you really want to keep the contents.

Yer welcome!

I'd hang on to the glitter, at least! Those are tiny squares of mylar, and from my experience, the ONLY glitter that has worked right. Even if you decided to ditch the liquid, hang on to your glitter and I bet we can get you happy in the end. You wouldn't believe all the things I've put mine through, and it looks so good now, I have to work at not gettin' a big head about myself, every time I look at it. I'm here for the long haul-we'll gett you there too!

And YES, I will figure out how to post pics/video as soon as possible. I've never even owned a cell phone, if that lends insight to my deal here!

finally got a pic---the video is on my page here cuz I can't seem to get it to post in this thread, sorry
