Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

The lava in a couple of Mathmos lamps got "tired". I bought a goo kit to replace it but I cannot unscrew the lids. I can tell it is not only screwed but glued. Does someone know how to open it???

Thanks!

most of them will unscrew with a bit of force, id suggest a rubber texture glove and a good twist, you can place the bottle upside down in a deep jug with boiling hot water, take the chill of the mathmos bottle first like leave in a bowl of warm water prior the place it upside down ( lid ) totaly under the hot water and leave for a few mins, then take out and with your rubber texture glove try turning the bottle top.

OR use a adjustable spanner and gentle clamp it on and turn but dont clamp it to hard that it messes the screw thread up. But ive found most of the older mathmos bottle tops come of pretty easy

Sounds like good advice. I´ll try that. Thanks!!!

Rather than placing the bottles and caps in boiler water I just heat the cap with a hairdryer for a minute or 2 before undoing the cap.

That sounds easier....

oh well that told me 26 years of collecting and restoring mathmos etc from glued bakelite tops to glass to metal screw bottle tops gone down the plug hole. now if it was say the copper part then i wouldnt suggest a metal tool as that would be stupid
