Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

School me on redoing a grande with existing wax and normal supplies

Okay, it's quite simple, I want to redo one of my shitty new grande custom bottles that look like pea soup.

I will be using the wax that came with the grande as both bottles are litterally brand new. One bottle has a week of runs on it.

School me on the ways of the jedi, however, I want to redo with basic available supplies that I can get locally, I'm not ordering anything online etc.

I have read several threads that talking about pickling salt, fog juice, distilled water, surf etc etc. Not all in one cocktail but across different posts etc.

I have an entire bottle of surf that came with a goo kit, so that I have. I picked up a bag of pickling salt simply cause it was $2 at walmart.

I am ready to give this a go and for shits and giggles I picked up a 2" flexible pipe cap from home depot to maybe use a cap instead of the metal cap and plug. I am sure with a little lube (LOL) and finesse I can get it to fit snuggly.

Use your Gookit surf, distilled water and propylene glycol  http://www.buyfoodgrade.com/propylene-glycol/

First, mark the current fluid level on the outside of the globe, either with marker or tape.

Drain and rinse the globe to remove as much cloudy fluid as possible, coat the inside of the globe with surf, fill half-way with distilled water and proper amount of surf for the globe size, heat and observe flow then add propylene glycol as needed (some people have reported that their globe flowed without adding PG or salt to increase density).  After you get the  globe flowing then add distilled water to fill the globe nearly full (about an inch low) and observe flow again, adjust as needed.  Then fill the rest of the way and observe.

This is just a basic overview, I will try to find more in-depth posts for you.

p.s.  This assumes that you are leaving the wax in the globe like I did.  If you remove the wax the process is the same except that you add the wax after rinsing the globe with surf.

maybe ill get lucky with distilled water and surf. i think the surf amount is 45mil

also would to keep wax in. can i rinse with tap ir should ut be dstilled?

what ya think of the cap idea. i found it in a thread here

Also this (from this page http://oozinggoo.ning.com/forum/topics/seeking-non-clouding-solutio... )

This is probably the best, most succinct, instruction for making new master fluid that I have seen.  It is what I have done before with some additional tips that I hadn't thought about.  Just to note, I use sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) instead of sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).  I don't know what actual difference it makes if any, both are common surfactants used in soap making.

Well, You have probably contaminated the goo at this stage.

Id give it one last "Hurrah" and dump the fluid,

heat the globe in a water bath on the stove,

When goo is melted, remove the goo and save in pyrex mixing cup.

Use some of the boiling water to wash the bottle,

Put spring back in

add some distilled water and surf,

shake to coat the inside,

dump the extra fluid,

add a few inches of distilled water.

Temporarily cap the top so the SURF coating doesn't dry while you reheat the goo.

Add the reheated heated goo with funnel and tube to avoid splashing,

add more distilled water to @80% of the level,

run it,

Once heated to 125Deg F, if it doesn't flow, carefully add propylene glycol to adjust specific gravity.

Wait for fluid to recover and get back to 125Deg F each time

if you reach the full water level and it does not flow, turkey baster some fluid out, and add more propylene glycol until it does.

Tap water should be fine for rinsing.  I don't think that you will get the decorative cap to sit right with that rubber cap and I think 2 inches is too small anyway, but I don't remember off hand what the top measures.  Maybe 3 or 3 1/2 inches?

Okay, I went to speners while out, their fog juice is not affordable $9.99 for a tiny bottle, looked like a small soda bottle.

Unless that is more than enough. It was scented though, not sure if that matters.

What about the pickling salt, surf and distilled water. Thoughts?

I need to be able to find stuff locally, where in the world does one find the glycol stuff?

Also, if In want to get the propylene glycol online, how much do I need and can someone put a link in this thread to exactly the correct stuff. Thanks.

I don't know how close Tractor Supply is to you, but here's a start.  One gallon of propylene glycol is 24 or 25 dollars.

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/store-locator?city=&returnSto...

At Amazon, this should be more than enough

Nothing close but I'm gonna try distilled water, pickling salt and surf first. If that does not work I'll order some PG and try again while I see what LL is going to do about getting me a clear bottle.

I don't have any input regarding salt, I don't have experience with it.  I would contact LL to let them know but wouldn't pursue a replacement yet.  I would delay it as long as I could until the weather warms up.

^^ I could do that and wait, however, I need for them to confirm my email with the second bad bottle, then at that point, i can discuss with them a solution as this new company might start to change policies and leave me shit out of luck.

You can get food grade PG at any feed store, is used in cows.  Hope this helps, you can buy it by the gallon there.

Magoo: I wouldn't exactly say that I have many feed stores on Long Island near the city hahaha. Anyway, I just might order some in the next week or so. I am running the new bottle for a week like the original bottle to see what happens.

it's a damn shame as both bottles, the flow is pretty darn good, when you are ultra close up ugh.

Keith, will check out the link. Oh, with regards to the pipe cap, it's almost the same exact width as the metal cap that holes the rubber plug in. Just a smidgen less wide. I am sure with a little oil or something else slippery it can slip right over then fasten the hose clamp. However If I can get these or one of the two working, I'll redo the cap properly.
