Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

hi goo fans, please can anyone advise me on what to use to polish a mathmos lunar lamp with, as you know the feet are alluminum cast and take some polishing to keep them looking spot on, the nose cone being very fragile i find hard to keep a good shine i find it turns dull, is this normal for these lamps, i dont want to use a metal polish with a cutting compound as i thought it may damage the nose cone, any ideas please would be great, thanks for all your help :o)

hi!

At first i used 'Silvo' which brought it up nicely, but then used 'Autosol' which you get from Halfords etc.
The only thing with the autosol, is dont polish the cap in a circular motion, as this will leave circular scratches, but if you rub it up and down no probs at all, and of course dont rub too hard as it is really for auto polishing.

The silvo was fine, but the autosol brought the legs up better.

If you do get any little scratches, dont worry they will polish out fine.
hello lucy, thanks again i will pop down to halfords and get some, if only mathmos would make these lamps again as i would love a brand new one :o) i asked them is there any chance in the lunar coming back but they said they are to costly to make so no plans at this time :o(
I am using a technic used to polish car bumpers when they were made with aluminium by using some sand paper and water, starting from big one and going down to the finest one possible: polishing is removing metal until the surface is really flat then a good shining agent should do the trick.
I am doing this for the feet but I'm a bit reluctant to use it for the nose cone or the part holding the bottle I must say!
Autosol is a cream polish, so i still think that is the best thing to use.

Just lightly rub it on using a cloth, and i mean lightly, then buff off. i also use it on the chromed plastic on my scooter, and that comes up great, no scratches at all.
thanks bohdan, thats interesting i shall try that once polished, the lunar has come up great but i think theres room for improvement, thanks for your help :o)
yes i did think about this technic, i am a car paint sprayer by trade and so that way of polish came to mind for the feet but like you say im not keen on the base and nose cone as they are fragile, thanks for your comment :o)
yes i will get some Autosol as lucy said, i forgot about that product so i shall take a trip to our halfords tomorrow :o) thanks guys and girl gooers
you can get an extra fine autosol, i havent used it as they didnt have any, but i guess this would be even better :)

it would be cool to see a before and after close up!
