Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

couldn't find any info on this....

craiglist buy - worked the first time i turned it on, now it doesn't. of course i've tried different outlets and bulbs.

so some troubleshooting and repair is necessary. this is a rare piece otherwise i wouldn't care so much, 32oz.

if this is too much work for me to do i might be willing to have a trusted goohead fix it for me.

thanks

I've seen this in a couple of the lamps I've purchased.  Sometimes fiddling with the bulb can get it to work.

In one of them, I just needed to unscrew the socket from the base, reset it, and screw it back down.

In a couple of the others, I've had to replace the socket and install new cords with dimmer switches.  If your lamp has felt on the bottom of the base, gently pull it off.  You may need to use a blow dryer to heat up the felt to loosen the glue.  The original felt can be re-glued when the repair is complete.

I think the problem may be when screwing in the bulb, the socket gets twisted because it's loose and this causes the wiring to touch and short.  Just my theory...

I've recently invested in sockets, nipples, screws, and lamp felt from this site - www.grandbrass.com.  I also purchased a pair of Heyco strain relief pliers to assist with what I think is the hardest part of the job -- getting the bloody bushing (it holds the cord where it enters the base) back in it's hole!

reset? fiddle? haha
just tried fiddling - nothing.
just unscrewed the one screw, now what?
....proceeding to google

if the socket looks good and the cord wires are attached to the posts with no visible damage, i'd be willing to bet it's a problem with the switch.  you can inspect it by unscrewing the tiny screw to make sure all connections are intact.

OH. MY. GOD... I can't even tell you how much you just helped me out... A BUSHING! Who knew?

You did!

well i got the felt off. got a new switch and socket....
waiting to hear from someone on how to disconnect the wires from the socket. i thought the bottom metal plate came off but apparently that is not correct..

This is where some long needle nose pliers come in real handy if you don't have teeny hands.  You have to find the tiny screw that holds the socket to the the metal support.  Disconnect the socket, grumble at the bushing/cord until you can get enough slack to pull the socket out and disconnect wires.

It is patience wearing at times, but actually quite simple.
