Century Model 101 - Was there such a thing?

See the model 101 - the florescent green/red wax lamp? Did this ever really exist? I've never seen one and this is the only picture I can see that has this color combo.

 

Anyone have any information on this lamp? Did it never make it to production?

I actually like the ones that get ugly but still work. I have a '72 Century where the lava is a murky pond scum green-brown. The liquid is a pale amber-cream when off, but clouds up to a milky greenish-yellow when working. A friend labeled it "The Snot Rocket", so I've given it a little sign.

I wouldn't mind it so much if it was clear. The lava is full of bubbles. It seems like a lot of early 70s lamps have really weird, soft, foamy lava. I have a Squiggle with weird wax, too. 

 

I won't part with this lamp, but I just wish it was a little nicer to look at.

 

Blind Faith says he has a model 101, so I am eagerly awaiting pictures!

Does it say model 101 on it anywhere? What year is is from? It looks like it's in decent shape and flows well. It's so pretty. My birthday is in November. :)

The inside of the cap should have a date sticker, visible when you tilt the globe. Any chance I can get a shot of it with a plain white background? And is the liquid really fluorescent green - like Hi-Liter marker yellow-green?

 

Someone needs to assemble all five late-60s Century colors: green/blue (with dark green lava, shown above on right), orange/yellow (with orange, not red, lava), red/clear, and the rare yellow/green-blue and the red/fluorescent green.

Timothy, can you tell us more about yours? Here are the details:

The lamp itself is called the Century model, and was produced from 1965 until a bit after 2001, with a number of small variants. First-year models have no 'feet' on the plastic tray, no seam at the base's 'pinch', a copper finish, and a rotary switch ON the base. Mid-60s models have feet on the tray, a switch on the cord, and a seam in the base (with an inner shell attached to the top cone which slides out somewhat) and retain the coppery color. Early 70s models switch to a solid, but seamed, base and a brass color which often fades to silver. From the late 70s onward, a brass finish was used that did not fade. Starting in the mid 90s, black and satin silver versions were produced. The lamp is the 100 series; it only acquired the Century name and the model designation ion 1966 when more models were introduced, whereas in 1965 it was simply the Lava Lite (the ONLY Lava Lite).

 

The hard part: The lamp pictured above is an extremely rare color variant. The 60s colors were: orange/yellow, green/blue, red/clear, red/fluorescent green (very rare, shown above), yellow/blue-green (very rare, shown above), and "champagne mist" (very rare, cream-colored lava in cloudy amber liquid). 70s colors were: red/yellow, red/clear, green/blue. Later 70s models have cream-colored wax instead of green in the green/blue. 80s colors were: red/yellow, white/blue.

 

If yours has a screw-on cap (as opposed to a crimped bottlecap with a plastic cover that sits over it) you can gently tilt the bottle when it's cool, rotate it, and see a date sticker up on the inner walls of the cap. Round stickers are post-1979 or so and don't fade; earlier ones are square and the printing often fades. They usually read like, example: "series 100 Oct. 1988". 70s square stickers sometimes only have the date, e.g. "Jan. '72".

 

If you give me more details I can do the same.

This is what I found off the lava lamp.
On the switch it said LEVITON with some volt number
The sticker inside the lamp the first few letters I can't see
what I can see is ____writers ____labor__Inc.

The Lava Color looks like a Cream Green or a light green the liqued if faded I don't the liqued color.

Oh geeze I am sorry Blind Faith, I thought for SURE I mentioned when I did the transaction with you that I tweaked the color from Yellow to Green. I did so by adding a little bit of green coloring to the yellow and it looked very close to what that catalog showed, I was happy with it for a bit but grew tired of it, then you inherited it ;) Does it still flow really good? It was a one piece base I remember and made only one blob at at time, very minimal and nice like the lava boxes from the 90's showed of the century.

Well, it still looks cool! I might have to find a cheap yellow/red and try that out. ;) It looks really nice.

Yes BlindFaith, that was my issue, moving again and again, I just had to downsize half my collection, it was as much as half the furniture I owned by volume, and became too much to bear. If I acquire a few, I make myself a deal and get rid of that many as well. Well glad its working for your collection for now, enjoy it while you can at least!
