I am in almost the same situation as you. Early 70s Century blue/yellow. Cloudy. Been running it for three days now.
I have another Century about the same age and did indeed chip the plastic cap trying to get it off. One method that did work for me getting an old cap off another lamp (without breakage) was using a wrench and some sort of rubbery-mat type material. I placed this rubbery/acrylic flexible shelf liner material around the cap then fit the wrench to twist and did it that way. That way, I had a good grip on the cap with the wrench and shelf liner and I didn't crack anything (this time).
I'd be up for a fluid change, but I have no other fluid to use. I'm kinda not wanting to mess with it and wondering if I keep running it, if it'll clear up.
