I have a 52z screw top clear/purlpe and I want to change the color of the liquid. Can I use plain food color or do I need something orther then that?

Mc Cormick's food colouring works just fine.
just be sure to not add too much at once-take it slow until you get the colour u want.
Yep, don't use too much... it doesn't "fade" as well as Lava's original dyes.
Red and purple are very hard to make. Yellow ,green , blue, work good red will turn orange no matter how much you add!
To do a red or purple, try ripping apart a Permenant marker, like a Sharpie... They dye better for those shades.
aww good advice i will try that, I did make a good purple color one time with easter egg dye tablet.
McCormik's "Neon Dye" food coloring has good purples and blues, (box with little easter eggs on the front I think) bought mine at Target a few weeks ago.
The purple in there is to die for, you can get extremely concentrated purples and blues as good as the USA made versions if not better. Of course the chart is for food purposes, but I have found that two drops purple, one drop blue, and one drop pink work well for a 52oz. But experiment with a glass of water and hold ever so easilu over the base to see the light passing through it. If the lava is melted and flowing, hold the glass with dyed water up and look through the glass at the lava lamp to test out the color before adding to the lava lamp.

i used a red UK food colouring and it came out deep blood red not orange I'll try and post a pic soon.
Pic of one of my Clear/Orange fluidiums coloured Red. Lovely warm glow.

Thanks Coolsox. Have posted a couple of the Blue Fluidium. Still need to switch it to another bottle as some clown on ebay "forgot" to mention half the logo was rubbed off on the bottle.
