Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Found oozinggoo.com when I was looking for ways to repair the Grande I picked up at CostCo a few years ago.  It's one of the Chinese made ones that has gone extremely cloudy and ceased to flow (going to try replacing the fluid one of these weekends).

It was here that I found out about really big Lava lamps.  I was bowled over by videos of the  Colossus lamps and really want to see if I could get one, I couldn't find them available anywhere so I wrote LavaLite.  I wanted to let this group know what I got this from Lava Lite today:

We have a special promo on the Colossus for serious buyers.   This will be the last time the Colossus will be seen.

Please see attached promo sheet with pricing included.

If you are interested please contact on my direct line at 630-496-6663.

Run 4 for my blue/yellow has been phenomenal for over 24 hours now. :)

It's back to its old self again!!

Loren,

Did you do anything different on these additional runs?

So i'm thinking that the yellow wax runs hotter? I'm wondering if all of these globes have 2 coils because mine does.

I have 3 grandes I bought at costco a few years ago 1 out of the 3 have dual coils so that makes me think that production varies.

I was just curious if the lamps that are blobing have 2 coils? I'm sure they do but I thought I would check.

Mine has two coils.

It can't all be heat related, I tried to run it as low as possible but still get it to flow and once flowing, it still blobs after about 3 hrs of good flow.

Ditto from me. ; )

Still waiting on Susan to get back to me. I hope she didn't sell my purple/pink! (grin)

When it was all sluggish I just turned it off and let it cool. The next night I turned it on for run 4, it spiked, and about an hour later we got a call that my dad needed to go back into the hospital. :( I tuned the colossus off for about 12 hours, and turned it on again the next night. I'm not sure if any of that even matters, or if I would have had a good 4th run anyway, but I thought I'd let you know exactly what I did. This is now coming up on 30+ hours running, and I don't see any bare coil this time...I think that may be the key.

How high were you turning it up to?  100% or ????

Nice data and analysis.  I think a good indicator of bulb performance would also be the temp of the base with each bulb.  My 300W heats the lamp about twice as fast as the 200W and the base gets noticibly hotter.  The higher temps also can create water bubbles in the goo...nice to watch them get big, burst or form golf balls at the top.

I started running my purple/yellow wax lamp today...with my modified 300 watt base.

Someone asked..or maybe i said something...i can't remember.
I managed to test out the 250w 'heat' bulb against my modified base with a 300w bulb in it.
All of these ar Farenheit. I used a infrared laser thermometer to take measurements.

250w
o) burned at 673 degrees max
o) white light
o) silver reflector base/clear top

300w
o) burned at 560 degrees max
o) white light
o) 'white frosted' top

These might be off +/- 25 degrees, but are obviously no joke.

I took pictures/measurements of both bases and I'll post that
stuff later. Right now i can say that the new base, for the colossus
i just got in the mail, is a lot shorter than the old base i have.
On my 300w modified base, the top of the bulb sits less than 1/4 of an inch
underneath of the hole in the base.

Once the globe is put into the base, I have no idea how to tell how far into
the base the globe sits. I supposed i could mark the globe and measure down into the
base to figure it out. I'm assuming that the globe sits all the way down in the base.

I have never turned my lamp up over 75% with the globe on it.

The first time I started it out at 60%, and pretty much kept it there.

Every other time I started at 70-75%, and turned it down a little later.

Run #2 report

Set it to waht we beleive is about 70%

3pm turned on, spiked about an hour later

Started flowing not long after

10pm

Came home and found 2 blobs again hovering above the coil, dimmed the lamp further. Definitely below 70% now

An hour later still 2 blobs

I'm gonna give it a couple more cycles and if I don't get a decent flow it's going back. These thing s are too expensive to be having to play all these games and only be getting an hour or two of good flow.

So just for kicks, I'm going to fire this lamp up again after having let it settle for an hour. Going to dial it up to below 70% and see what happens.

Tomorrow going to put the lamp on a timer, starting the lamp at 6pm and maybe 50% to see what results I get

So update on cooling it off for an hour and restarting around what i think is 50%.

Nice slow flow, great combination of long stretchy columns and various sized blobs. Gonna leave it on overnight until about 8am cst. Then power down, place on a timer to start up at 6pm at a little more than 50% and will check in on it at 10pm cst

Will report flow later on tomorrow morning after 9am.
