Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

This was the 5th quart of goo I've tried to run in this grande. Magma Tower keeps sending me a new quart of goo. Five times. And that's just the ones that went to the correct address. I have like 6 quarts sitting over here marked "BAD". Want to see what happened this last time?

Yes, that was running for 17 straight hours. Just like every other time. And look what it's doing...also just like every other time. I see people post their beautiful new goo kitted grandes here often, and I just want to scream. Obviously Magma Tower loves you, and hates me. :(

What bulb are you using? I had this problem when I was using a 100W bulb and not a 100W spot bulb. To me, it looks like it's not getting hot enough.

Check out the 1st and 2nd page here: http://oozinggoo.ning.com/forum/topics/my-first-gookit-grande

Also, how close is the bulb to the base?

This is what happened to mine after HOURS of running it on a 100W NON-spot incandescent:

It's one of the reflector bulbs. :( It's not clear, it's frosted, but it's a 100w reflector bulb. Sigh... :( The base is really HOT though! After 17 hours, it burned me to touch it. If it's getting that hot, then why isn't that hot enough?

Oh, and I've never had a giant, or another grande, so I don't know if the bulb is too low...but this looks like it's less than half an inch away from the bottom of the globe. Thanks for your help, Erin!

How many coils are in the globe, and what coils did you use? Grande coils or GooKit mesh coils?

A frosted spot 100W should work.

Also, what's the room temp in your place?

I moved the grande upstairs, because it's slightly warmer up here. It's like 72-73? Downstairs is about 69-71. There are no drafts, fans, or vents blowing on the lamp.

There is one coil, which Doc. removed himself from the previous lava. I never had any luck with the screen they include in goo kits.

I can't even pour this out! The wax never melted completely. I have to just pour the water out, and heat the globe on a hot plate to force-melt the wax enough to pour it out. :( As soon as I can bring myself to do this for the 5th time, I will. I want my orange glitter back.

Quiet down in here!

*Whispers obscenities*

Here's what I've been doing to get around that same problem with the goo kit I bought.  It causes a rough start to the lamp, meaning tiny goo blobs galore and some bubbles in the main blobs of goo, however once the dang thing is flowing, I've turned it off to rest, then restarted, and that has cleared away my rough start issues.  If you are at the end of your rope, you may want to give this a try.  I  2/3 fill my clean globe with HOT water, I add the coil and the recommended amount of surf.  I place the long tube with the funnel on top in the bottle.  Then I take my melted hot goo and pour it into the waiting hot water+surf-filled globe.  Something about doing this has helped me get past that stage you've demonstrated here.  Good luck, whatever happens!

PS-I keep my home's water heater on high, so I do mean the water I add to the globe is H.O.T.

Heh Loren! I think I would just put your grande out with the recycling! You need a break from your grande trip!

I'm sure we ALL need a break from it at this point! LOL!
