Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

All,

I goo kitted a century bottle a few days ago and all was right in the world. The first two days the lamp ran beautifully.

Third day it seems as if a lava plug formed up top, maybe 1/8" thick same diameter as the bottle top.

Ran it a forth day added a tad more color to go from really light blue to medium blue and now the plug is maybe 1" thick.

Lava at the bottom only goes up half way now no matter how long lamp is run.

I have a suspicion. The colored wax provided with the kit, in this case, blue is contaminating the lava and causing some of it to be way to buoyant.

I will attach a photo tomorrow which will show the problem. I fear this bottle has to be redone.

What else could cause this. Right now the lamp looks like an old 70's model that has separated top and bottom when you find them used.

Thoughts?

sounds like you left the cap off while running it

Goo will get cold and harden when it rises to the top and catches air

Put bottle in boiling water bath again until goo is all hot and mixed, then cap it (you don't have to crimp it) and let it cool

I did that late last night. Lamp has just been turned back on. Another plug formed last night after it cooled but smaller and then fell to the bottom.

The lamp was just turned on, I will report back later this evening.

Thanks

Goo kits are notorious for "floaties"

Dealing with one myself in a grande

Floating are one thing, a 1"thick plug is another. I warmed up the lamp and then turned it off after a few hours, it's back on now and warming up again, so far so good.

If you have any problem with it melting, or wanna hurry up the process, just hit it with a hair dryer

Well believe it or not, the lamp seems to be back to normal at least for now, turned it off and now floaties and or plugs to be found it worked as it should so for the time being I am happy.

Thanks for the help.

Glad to hear it

I put a blanket over mine and let it run until all goo was floated and clear

'Whatever is left, I'll probably remove and toss into the plug bottle for experimentation at future date

its just too damn cold in here to get hot enough in a grande it seems

I am sure grandes don't like cold air, they needs lots of heat!

Okay so here is a new problem. Both my goo kit lamps, one blue the other greenish yellow, are used usually at the same time. Both were made within days of eachother. Both have only distilled water and surf and both bottles were crystal clean when made.

My greenish yellow lamp, the fluid seems a bit cloudy today for no reason. The blue one, crystal clear. Both were used yesterday for about 5 hours, no more.

What would cause this. The fluid looks like the color of the lava but much much lighter.

I'm gonna run it today for about 5 hours and see what happens.

Thoughts?

initial bleed off of go dye.

just change the water

Okay, that makes, I didn't know that happens. My blue one didn't seem to do it and if it did was very minor I didn't notice it.

Thanks again  claudius maximus!

you're welcome

that is another reason i mix the dye before tossing the go in the lamp
