Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hey Guys,

After winning the Orange/Purple fluidium that was on eBay I've now got a full
set of boxed Gen1 Fluidiums with the round Lovegrove dot on the bottles :)

Opal/Clear
Yellow/Clear
Orange/Clear
Green/Clear
Orange/Purple
Green/Blue

I know there was some talk on here about if the Orange/Purple was genuine, I’ve
given it a good look over and everything seems to check out fine. It flows just
like a fluidium should and there's no sign of any tampering to the cap. There
is some heat damage to the base which is common on the fluidiums with the heat
shield and golf ball lamps which are in my opinion just not suitable and don’t buy
or use the new halogen ones from mathmos as they run the bottles way to warm
and overheat them within 4 hours. I’m lucky to have a handful of the 40w
reflector lamps so I run mine on them without the heat shields.

If anyone does have an orange base spare that isn’t heat damaged that they want
to sell please drop me a message, I don’t need the wiring just the base.

I will admit my Green/Clear is a bit of a hash, it’s the base/cap from one lamp
with a Lovegrove bottle from another which I had to refill from a new mathmos
bottle as it was cloudy. I liked the base/cap from the other lamp better as
they are a slightly darker green where the other is a little more translucent.
That one lives in my office at work with a new mathmos bottle in it :)

Just wanted to share the good news with you guys and I will get some pics up
soon, drop me a message if you have a spare orange base you want to sell.

Thanks
Dan :)

Hi Bill, If there isn’t any sign of heat damage I really wouldn’t worry about it. I wouldn’t run them on 30w reflector lamps as they won’t give enough heat to the lava to make it flow properly, it will flow just not very well. I use a 30w reflector in my opal fluidium as it flowed too fast for my liking with a 40w, I run all my others on 40w reflector lamps. You won’t be able to buy these lamps as they were made especially for mathmos and are a little smaller than a standard 40w reflector. The boxes for the fluidiums changed slightly over the years, looking at mine some show the 40w reflector lamp, some show the golf ball lamps and some with or without the heat shield, the colours stayed the same they just changed the detail very slightly as the spec changed. Yes mine do have some air bubbles in the wax, it comes and goes and is just a characteristic of the softer fluidium wax, I kinda like the bubbles if I’m being honest.
Hi Dan, just had a thought went on the Mathmos site on replacements and see that they sell fluidium bulbs are these the 40w reflector bulb only they cost £4.50?
Hi Bill, No thats not them, they are halogen replacements, i bought one a while ago but they run the bottle too hot and it overheats within 4 hours.
Hi Dan, oh well never mind I will keep running them on the coloured booster bulbs for now. And will keep an eye on the bases may be one day I might come across some of the 40w reflector bulbs on ebay.
