Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Hello All,
I'm brand new to all this, 3 days ago my lady friend dug out a 18" Hot Rock #4650X w/yellow lava, blue water, by Lite FX , Farmingdale NY, but says made in China.
I've spent the last 3 days reading your site and a couple others, and tinkering with it as site instructions suggested. It was cloudy, wax smeared on inside walls. Drained it, including wax, cleaned and throughly rinsed, did every step and ,,,, as soon as it starts to heat up, wax clouds start wafting up and around like smoke.
I'll make new wax etc etc.
Question : is there any place that still has this brand & style Plus globes etc???

If your looking to completely replace the lamp try eBay. If you just want to redo the contents of your globe try http://www.gookits.com/ where you can make your own. There's also several threads on here showing how to goo kit step by step. Another option is contacting either Kirk or Loren on this site, and have them make you custom glitter if your into glitter.

another easy fix is to just buy a modern lamp, carefully empty the contents into you old lamp, and then use the new lamp for goo kit / glitter or experimentation

Thanks guys, as I stated I"ll start from scratch, tons of info on this site, thank you, and had thought of the buy new swap contents, but then have to scratch build that one.

The real question was about the company that made it and about spare parts, like the top cap is dented, the rubber stopper is starting to split, I did a fantastic job if I do say so of myself of getting the metal nonscrew, crimp on non fluted bottle cap off.

1 more question, is there a substitute for perc, thats easy to obtain? Other than spray can cleaners, ?

commercial Perc is not easily available unless your on a first-name basis with your dry cleaner

Otherwise use the brake fluid method

Either its messy and smelly

I opt to use more modern fluids with less hassle and fumes

What color is the wax and fluid?
I have several colors of lava and fluid from new lamps I emptied to convert to glitter

Modern fluid is a @70/30 -80/20 mix of distilled water and propelene glycol

(i never mix it right off, I add a little at a time until lava floats correctly)

top Cap

I found a slightly used bottle capper on ebay for $30

New are $50/60+
Worth the investment if you plan on making and collecting lamps

Blank caps can be had on ebay too, or at your local home-brew shop

Claude, the wax is yellow, water is blue.

*so you use propylene glycol in stead of Salt or Epsoms?

*could you expand on "other more modern fluids" , I 'assume' you meant in place of the Perc since you referred to smell, etc.

Yes on the propylene glycol (although I have used Epsons in the past).

70/30- to a 80/20 mix with distilled water for lava brand lamps

whenever I get a cloudy lamp, I just dump the fluid and start over with distilled water, leaving room for propylene and add a bit at a time. Then add food color is required

Modern = newer lamps/goo kits

The only Yellow wax I have in stock is from an OLD Grande and it has black bits in it from age.

I planned on trying to save it by straining it when my new funnels arrive.

It would not be advisable for a beginner.

I suggest you just get a goo kit from Magma tower.

It works so well, and is easy to do without harmful chemicals

You can even experiment with colors of lava like I did with the UFO I posted

Metel non-screw, crimp-on non-fluted bottle cap.

HINT: Use silicone on the rubber stopper and cover it with heat-shrink tubing.
Then when cool, trim off the excess

Works for me

Claude, can you post a link for the heat-shrink tubing?

I bought it in ebay ages ago

I have to use a needle nose piers to stretch it since it is not quite large enough

it is the size for 1/0 battery cable

I think it is 3/4" diameter but if you get 1" it would be better

I'll send you a piece if you want-PM me

I appreciate that!  But I was gonna check your source for a larger size to seal a grande

Grande? Oh thats different for sure

Were you not able to save the metal cap????

I have a extra stock seal from my grande because Kirks formula comes with a special seal for expansion

I have the metal, I just can't get it crimped properly.  I've got a clamp on it that makes the cover cap uneven
