Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I just placed an order for 120ml of Triton X-100 and 16oz (473ml) of SLES.

Based on the discussion here (https://oozinggoo.ning.com/forum/topics/what-bleach-for-fluid) it sounds like an Astrobaby will require 5-10ml of Triton and then some amount (several ml's?) of SLES. 

Since this is my first time messing with the innards of a lava lamp, I want to make sure I get it right.

As I understand it, you take distilled water and add the above chemicals very slowly, testing flow periodically until it looks right? Is it that easy? Do I need to wait for the lamp to cool before adding more drops of chemicals?
