Hi, I bought a Mathmos silver glitterball on ebay. Plugged it in and the
bottle had a crack and leaked all over. I salvaged 90% of the glitter
and liquid and put it in a spare bottle I had. I need help with the
following:
Why so smelly? The glitterball liquid was like syrup and smelled really nasty.
What is that inside of the bottle that smelled so bad and Is that smelly stuff toxic?
What can I use to top it off? It's about two inches low.
Post or email me at EROZMOS@ROADRUNNER.COM
Please help ASAP.
Thank you.

Hi, good news!
Did not know it was cracked, found out fast!
It's a glitterball with metallic wax.
Is there any way to top off the liquid?
Thanks!
hello :)
the only way to top it off is to buy another glitterball bottle and use that fluid. but of course then you will still have one bottle with low fluid! the liquid is totally different to any other type of lamp and if you try to top up with anything else you will ruin it.
sorry about that.
I had always thought the fluid was glycerin.
At least I remember someone on the old board doing a fluid replacement with pure glycerine.
In know the crestworth glitterama's are glycerin (I'm totally positive on that one).
i had heard the old glitterama bottles were the same fluid but are so much more rare than glitterballs I didnt see the point in mentioning it. Plus if I had a glitterama bottle there is no way i would steal its fluid for a glitterball!
do you think it would be best to completely change the fluid for glycerine? instead of topping up?
I've never opened a glitterball to test the fliuid, I'm only going by what the consistancy seems to be, plus what someone else told me.
I know for a fact the fluid in glitterama's is glycerine as I broke one. I tasted it. It tasted exactly like the pure glycerine I had purchased from somewhere else.
In fact, after I broke it, I saved the glitter, then re-created the glitterama with the pure glycerin and the saved glitter.
I tried making my own glitterama, but the glitter I used always melted so I stopped.
In comparision, the consistancy of glitterama fluid and glitterball fluid "looks" the same.
I have never done the taste test of a glitterball, so it's up to you to compare the fluids.
if it's slippery and/or slightly sweet it may be the same. I don't know if they have put other chemicals in it.
Considering that your glitterball is already ruined, I don't think you can go much worse with topping off the glitterball with pure glycerine (but then again you could ask mathmos too). You do not have to sacrifice a glitterama as glycerine should be readily available.
>> whats the glitter like from the original?
It's small, color full and does not melt with heat. LOL. The plastic glitters just do not work. needs to be foil of some sort.

I had a pharmacist taste glitterball fluid and she said it's not glycerine. Also glycerine is not quite a thick as glitterball fluid.
Eron, I have some spare glitterball fluid, but its not crystal clear. If you dont find out what it is I can send you some, you just have to cover the postage, fluid is free. It's not enough for a whole bottle, but sure enough to top it off.
Channeling your inner Frank Zappa! Absolutely hilarious.
