It would be great if you could incorporate the lid on this project. I wonder if you could add the "lazer pryimid" to the death star. Drill some small holes and extend some sort of clear material out so it would glow. Man, you have a whole range of possibilities to explore.
Here is an idea. Spray the inside of the Death Star jar a satin black. Now take a 52z China base drill a few holes on the side of the base and also paint it black. Have the 52z base sitting alittle low in the cookie jar. With the lamp on it will look like a lava war machine coming out of the base and the inside will also be lit as it looks like it rises. I believe a Grande will kill the base from the weight.
I would top the globe with a massive Jar Jar Binks.
So after weeks of figuring out what to do with the death star, I decided to go this route. What I plan to do is place a 52 oz. globe in it and add this as a cap :) I figured what better ship to use then a star destroyer right? plus this one has fiber optic lights built into it giving it much more detail and another light source other then the lava lamp light. It'll be tricky to get it to balance properly but with a little patience it'll be fine. I also looked into adding green legos for the death star's secret weapon :) I can order parts thru lego's website for the death star lego set (http://www.thegreenhead.com/imgs/lego_death_star_2.jpg) and add those to the jar as well as adding a addition light source to light up the lego pegs. It's a work in progress and will take some time to do but I think this thing will rock hard core once done.
Northbrook Court has a Lego store and you should be able to get what you need from their bulk offerings.
I did a rough mock-up of what this is going to turn into. I've ordered the Fiber Optic Star Destroyer model today woohoo!! These are hard to find but I got a decent deal on one NIB so once that is together this project will be rolling. This is going to look sweet when the star destroyer fiber optic lights are on. The looks sort of remind me of the encounter lamps.
Turning out to be a great looking Star Wars lava lamp.

You might try fishing line for the lasers. They have florescent green but I'm not sure if it would be stiff enough
