We can only hope you do.........I was watching it too, but when I saw one certain person bidding, I knew to forget it. And I definitely forgot it when you said you loved it. No way am I gonna bid against one of my buddies on here if I know it's them.
Awww, you're too kind Libby. Don't let that stop ya' though! Seriously.
I can't help it. If I think someone here wants something, I can't bid on it. So if I ever accidentally do, it would only be because I didn't recognize someone by those crazy handles ebay uses now for everyone while bidding.
While I appreciate your thoughtfulness, I would encourage you to change your stance. :-)
Maybe its just me, but I have never been upset losing out on a lava lamp. Its happened to me countless times, and I know I have been "dream crusher", most likely to many of you, on countless occasions as well. I see it in a number of ways. First and foremost, its a lava lamp. Ain't gonna pay your mortgage, make you better looking, get rid of your hemorrhoids, etc. Its sole purpose in life is to sit there, look wickedly cool and put a smile on your face. With that being said, how could you be truly upset when losing out on something with purely hedonistic value?
Secondly, patience grasshopper. There are not too many lamps that I have only seen once on ebay. You see a lamp today, you will most likely see it on other occasions as well. Maybe your financial situation will be better months, years from now. Maybe Mr./Mrs. Deep Pockets will be content and out of the running when it comes up in the future.
Personally - I only know one eBay handle, and that is Chow's. If I had had an ebay nemesis it would have been Chow. He was most certainly a nemesis on eBay, but it was the exact opposite off ebay. Sometimes I noticed that Chow had bid early on something so I would toss in a bid or three just to get his attention; essentially an elbow to the ribs. We would trash talk via personal email while auctions were ongoing when we knew we were bidding against each other. And we're not talking common lamps here, Chow and I were sparring on Gem Lites. Even with those stakes (considering a Gem Lite's desirability), Chow and I had a blast going toe to toe. I think it has actually added to my enjoyment of collecting. Chow and I became closer due to our inability to get out of each other's way on ebay auctions. Why make winning an auction mundane when you can have the drama of battling a buddy? I have no issue with it and makes collecting more exciting.
And yes, I willfully admit that I am the type that will go into the neat and rare thread and post screen captures of my wins. My own personal "brag board" per se and my way of letting fellow Oozing Gooers that may have bid that I am the one that was licking those tears off their cheeks.

I used to be upset about losing lamps, but it doesn't phase me much anymore. Like you said, it's just a lamp. And when I think about someone who's spending 1000s each month on lamps... well, clearly they need it more than I do. I sometimes wonder if they have an appreciation for them like I do, but it doesn't matter, does it?
Money always wins, and I guess that's what makes me a little sad sometimes - I always like seeing the underdog get a cool/rare lamp, instead of always seeing he with the deepest pockets getting it.
My two cents.
I am sad to learn that lamps will not clear my hemis though - a truly sad fact indeed.

Money does win in the end, but I have strong faith that the karma train looks out for the likes of us (i.e. "good people" who love lamp) as well. I have no doubt that you will eventually get your Kaleidolite. I forget how I found mine buried on ebay, but I snagged mine for like $125'ish. Mine was different than the one that just sold as mine has the Econolite style fan blade capped cylinder that rotates as the light bulb heat rises. This one being the other style had me a bit excited. Excited at $20.49, concerned at $66 and blown away at $385.
I did credit the karma train in many of my battles with Chow though. Don't get me wrong, Chow thoroughly stomped my sorry ass each and every time I went toe to toe with him. It was actually quite sad to watch. Cue the karma train...
GemLite Glitter Continental/Oval Executive - lost to Chow. Seller says, "I actually have a second one..." And for those who know Chow, this is where you picture him trying to put a penny on the tracks in front of the approaching karma train... "and the box is actually nicer on this one than the one that just sold to your friend." ROFLMAO!!!!! Deal was "off ebay" to save on fees, selling price not what Chow paid, but what I was willing to pay (2nd place bidder). Sold! ... and of course later sold to fund my Colossus.
Spooktacular Glitter Icon - First one I see I must have. So must Chow. BNIB, worth $225 all day long to me (which, in my opinion, is indeed "stepping up"), but you know the story. Sad banana as Chow once again leaves me staring at the screen in disbelief. A few months later, choo choo. BNIB and still worth $225 to me. I do my usual and wait till 7 sec, 6 sec, 5 sec... bid. Heart stops... I win at $125'ish. Delighted, but who jacked the price to $125 from where it was I wonder? Chow. Appears he wanted book ends, but his desire for a second had apparently waned compared to his desire for his first.
So keep looking and keep looking in unusual places and in unusual ways. Never know how these things will be listed as they are a bit hard to describe. Most don't peg them as Lava Lite products. Sometimes you just need to find that magical search string. And then you lurk and pray, hoping that no one else knows how to find the lamp. And of course use your mod powers if someone decides to "out the lamp" in a thread. ;-)

I did tell Jonas not to post about this lamp on OG. :P But I knew as soon as I saw a certain bidder on that lamp (who sadly, isn't a member here - no sharing of the joy after the sake), there was no hope. I think they must place like a $1000 bid to ensure they get the lamp.
Oh well. You're right, just a lamp, but I always do a happy dance when one of our members here gets a super rare lamp for cheap and didn't have to empty their bank accounts against those who have far deeper pockets.
I'll stare at the beauties that I have. No biggie. I'm over it.
The good thing about a good price for some of these lamps is people take notice and may list one soon after.
$385 for the Kaleidolite is not a bad deal considering it's rarity. 10 years ago, I paid about 2/3rds of that for mine in box.
I learned, there's always another around the corner, if you have to have it, bid appropriately, if not toss in a bid and hope for the best. If you loose to a high bidder with deep pockets, chances are they will not be bidding again.
Also, with the way this community works, a number of these lamps seem to go around to one another. Many people sold me their lamps. I've sold many of my lamps at my cost, which was a steal considering what they went for in the auction arena. Then there are the ones you couldn't pry from my fingers without an offer i could not possibly refuse!
For those with deep pockets.. I did not refuse.
I can't complain, Jim. As a complete noob I lucked out getting that perfect, although without the box, GemLite Glitter Continental/Oval Executive for $65.00, and the Parrot Glitter Graphics for $29.00. That might be my best and only complete luck-outs in my life, and no one was bidding against me. I was just in the right place at the exact right time, and not on Ebay. Actually, I was not even sure what either lamp was, I just knew I liked them on sight. The sale of yours made me buy that GemLite, so I have you to thank for that one. I took a chance it was the same lamp and was willing to pay $65.00 even if it wasn't. Too lovely to pass up no matter what it was. I won't ever cry about losing a lamp, but I am completely devastated to find out the sad truth that they are not making me better looking, as I had high hopes that they would. With so much beauty hanging around the house, I thought some "might" rub off on me........oh well.....
I know who was bidding on that lamp, I was watching it too, and had no clue what it was either until Erin told me. So I just backed away when I saw he was bidding and she wanted it. I just watched it all unfold from the sidelines. Didn't know you wanted it too, Jim, but I wouldn't bid against you either. I know for a fact I can't compete with that other person, and suspect he might be Bill Gates in disguise. Here's to hoping that another couple of those lamps of Erin's dreams comes around again, so that you also get your matching pair.
Your stories of your bidding wars have been great entertainment, we need a thread started on them, really. Here I was thinking I had nerves of steel, but you and Chow put me to shame, must be a man thing, but it is very amusing. Even though you encourage me to change my stance, I still could not bring myself to bid on anything that I thought most of my OG buddies wanted, with the caveat of "IF" I know your ebay handle, and sadly, I only know a handful, if that. Still horribly depressed to find that lamp beauty doesn't rub off on me though.
