Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

I was about ready to GooKit my glitter Grande from Mike, and then I realized I didn't have a spare coil. I've read through several threads on here about coils (including the most definitive one started by Kris) and I still am not certain what I need.

Someone in that thread mentioned that the coil needs to be stainless steel. Makes sense. But, the coils purchased from Lowe's were zinc-plated, and someone said those would corrode over time.

If anyone has replaced a coil with something and it's worked, can you post it here?

Does zinc-plated truly corrode in our lamps, and if so, how long does it take to corrode?

I'll update this post after I search the hardware stores here. I am also going to write Magma Tower and once and for all find out how you're supposed to use those mesh screens they now include with GooKits (what happened to the coils?!).

Magma Tower has always used screens, then they switched to coil, then back to screens again. I have no clue why, I'm sure it has something to do with the cost or maybe the availability. I ordered a kit back when they sent out coils and honestly they sucked too. It was nothing like what Jonny pictured in the gookit group. It was a long, tangled mess of a spring that looked like a tiny version of a slinky and was just as flimsy. Just not good, but better then the screen. They used to have instructions on the screen in the manual but I just noticed they don't anymore. I would email them too. I've found stainless steel coils at smaller local hardware stores maybe give them a whirl. Also if you have any non-working lamps laying around you can always use the coil from those. If the coils are too small, you can stretch them a little bit or just use 2 smaller coils linked together and throw those in.

here is question... most coils are a standard size.right?. would it be more condusive to a lamps flow for a coil to be same diameter as inner bottle bottom...

for examp. on a larger bottle like 52 oz it has (at least in mine) the same size coil as a 32 oz, if the coil was larger might it heat up the lamp more efficient . It freaks me out that cause I think havin to use a stronger bulb to get it to flow and still I feel the flow is lacking as well as shorting the lavas lifetime. I have on 52 oz that looks like its singed and some of it now it showing during flow. It was in this condition when it followed me home..   this is just speculation on my part..but would like to know because I have someone who may make custom coils for me..

Ideally its best when the coil does fit the inner bottle bottom, but I've seen some 52 oz. with smaller coils ( like for a 32 oz.) and even seen double coils on some 52 oz. as well.

Thanks for the response Shawn. I went to the hardware store today and none of the coils were stainless and most were too short/thick whatever. I'm going to try the big box retailers next (Home Depot, Lowe's).

Kira, I have several coils that seem to have brown stuff around them...you don't notice it too much when the lamp flows, but it's annoying.

I am writing Magma Tower right now. I've only purchased two GOoKits and both have contained the mesh screen with no instructions on how to use it. I don't have a clue how you WOULD use it!

Mike, I would LOVE to have that coil. Thanks for the offer. :) I'll text you on Thursday.

Both my Grande's have 2 coils. Do I re-use both with the gookit? The guide on here only shows one. Let me know what they say about the kits screen. Thanks.
Hey Brent, it's odd that your grande came with 2 coils in them, Whats the manufacturer date on it? All I've ever seen was one big coil in them, but either way you would just whats in there, I wouldn't use the screen.

wow... screens... what the heck is this.. no coils.. screens for what flipping bongs..why is everything seeminly difficult or a hunt any more..

well I am gonna un ass a dead bottle of a coil and give it to my guy and see if he cant re create these..

the singe on one of my 52 oz has left the ring and mixing in with the flowing lava.. doubtful anyone else would notice it but I sure do..the flow on this lamp pretty much sucks anyhow.. it takes a while to get going then.. about an hour after running it all just does the dead on bottom and other on top....  fine since i got it for 3 dollars at a second hand..and i think will be on the dump list too

I have a theory about screens versus coils. If you have clear fluid in your lamp. you may want to use the screen. The screen will reduce the glare of the lightbulb when all the goo has left the bottom of the globe. If you notice a small amount of goo stays on the coil normally right? So the screen will also have a thin coating of goo on it. I redid 2 astros and 1 ( clear red one)has a screen and the other has a  coil, that's what they came with.

They seem happy toghether.

so the one on the right has the screen then? // both seem to have nice flow... really love the orange...
But do you just lie the screen in there flat? I would think you'd have to bend it to get it in, so how do you get it in there intact?
Hey  there fellow chums. Its easier to put the screen in the screw top bottle as the mouth is wider. Just get the size right or it'll be hard to get back out.

OK, I contacted a few companies on the internet and may have someone to make these coils. :) Here's what they want from me - can anyone help?

1. Outside diameter

2. Wire size

3. length

4. # of coils

5. end type

I don't have any spare coils lying around right now since they are all IN my lamps! LOL
