This lamp above was one of my first attempts for the metallic sharpie technique. Been almost a year since this was made and what I've noticed with the metallic wax technique is that it's not permanent. The base of the metallic ink seems to eventually separate a little and stay at the bottom. Now it's being run for 9 months at 8 hours a day 5 days a week may have a effect on the separation or it may not. So I decided to dye the wax red and in the pics below you can clearly see the separation but whats really cool, in a way, that it has a swirling of metallic ink! Reminds me of old school bowling balls lol. Even once in a while a bubble of nothing but ink will burst in the wax and it looks like a firework, its really bizarre but really cool as well.

I dont think it matters that the "silver" sinks, the liquid metal motion lamps (like Rob C posted) do the same thing, It just mixes really well when flowing. I did purchase some Pearl Ex Silver Pigment from Hobby Lobby this week so I made up a 20 oz. gookit wax globe last night. And made the color a dark blue so I could see how well the silver "pops". I used 1/2 a teaspoon last night and the effect are sort of like the picture of the red one I posted at the beginning of this thread. It has a little funky glitter effect too but I have a feeling its only something you'd see with darker waxes. I'm going to see how far I can push this and see how much I can add to the wax before its too much so I'm going to add another 1/2 teaspoon at a time.
Here is a link to the stuff I bought (Silver 663) http://www.jacquardproducts.com/pearl-ex-pigments.html
I believe Lamp may have tried this brand before but if I recall he used Pearl White which may be a different substance then silver.
Hey Guys! I'm a newbie here and I'm really interested in this evolving discussion about metallic goo. I have no idea if this might work and I do know it can be dangerous if handled poorly, but do you think that mercury would possibly work well in the wax? I wonder if it would even mix. Sounds like a very interesting experiment to try since both goo & mercury react greatly to heat. Possibly the mercury would just collect up top when the lamp heats up. Maybe one day I'll work up enough guts (or stupidity?) to try it.
Hi, everyone, this discussion makes me feel like a kid in a candy store, I don't know where to start or stop and because of all the generousity and warmth everyone here invites other to take part of has urged me to raise my own interest in the love that I have come appreciate also and have made some snooping on the web for all sorts of alternatives. I've purchased some Pearl Ex pigment also, a 12 bottle package with color ranging from bronze, silver, gold to interference violet and so on, but my reinvigerated good fortune all because of this group have stumbled upon a company's website that produce these very same product in massive amounts that supply manufacturers of cosmetics to car paint to leather to food industry, you name it. The range of pigments they produce literaly knocked my socks off, you have to see to believe it. I'm new to all this techno webbie stuff, so I just typed the web address, http://www.alibaba.com. A definate must see eye opener. I've started by setting up a make-shift studio for photography and a experimentation area so as to document everything. I'm buying enough ingredients and collected enough goodies so when there's a lampygoo run to be made, I'll have at least 6 to 10 different micro variations of a goo recipe at any time. I'm saving some of my pennies for those pigments from alibaba, they sell by minimum quantities 1kg to tons and some interesting ones are not cheap from a couple of bucks a kilo to $400 a kilo. I hope this all helps. I'm so excited I don't know where to throw myself. Man, another credit to this group, you type in the address and theres the link, just awesome everyone. I've made certain the link is good and when your there just input pigments in search area. I'm sure you'll be shazaamed. chow 4 now.

Yeah, mercury is so heavy, it probably would settle out immediately, and would never be carried by the goo.

Have you ever tried the metallic embossing powders? I think it works much better than the markers (less messy for me, and my kitchen, besides the markers Ink seem to blow apart the wax when it heats up)
Great lamps!
Im very curious! you've had success with embossing powders? do you have any pics? and where do you get the powders from?
I get the powders from a craft store its actually used on ink. i haven't had a lot of success with my mix yet.. have had a lot of wax blow out due to too much salt, or something..... I have done 4 lamps which were a success ( yes I am a rookie) have had disasters with about 6. the photo I am uploading was clear wax with a pink and orange powder it doesn't look all that metallic in the shot but was really a great one at the time. It ran about 2 hours and turned it off -turned it back on the next day and it was a dud. never cycled again...
the next pic is the gold embossing powder- didnt put a lot in so will try with the pre made goo.
thanx!
Hmm maybe this embossing powder choked out the flow of your lamps? Loren has the same issues with Mica powders.
I'm thinking maybe you are right-it rolled furiously on the pink one for that fist cycle-it was great. then sad when it wouldn't go again.
I'm waiting right now for my wax to cool on a new one with the powder....if it doesn't work I am going to scream into a pillow and then get the goo off the website.
How was the view of the "snow" moon?
ttyl.
HAHHA no clue.. you'd have to figure out how many grandes go into 1 colossus.
