Comment by Eliot on May 28, 2017 at 5:39am: It'd probably be best to keep them as they are, or at least fit replacement B15 lampholders, still seems to plenty of old stock of the 40w lamps on eBay. Keep an eye out for any made by Greenstock, they made a range of 8,000 hour golfballs. They're slightly dimmer than standard ones but last so long they'd likely not need replacing for years.

Comment by Callum Carr on May 27, 2017 at 5:28am: I stand corrected! Fortunately I haven't ordered my GU10 bulb holders yet so I guess I can look at the other options available to me. I do like that GU10s are reflector bulbs though. I've never been a fan of bayonet fittings.

It would be interesting to know why Mathmos have gone for GU10 if this format too is now under sentence of extinction, unless maybe they plan to make their own? (Surprising format choice, IMHO)

And once stocks are exhausted, I'm guessing China would supply if you're a large enough customer, so maybe there is some kind of a role for OG? Whether as a pressure group, or as something more?

There are many ramifications and implications I don't understand, but I do know we need incandescent bulbs for lava and glitter now and in the future.

Is there more information out there, perhaps, for us to learn more, please?

Comment by Eliot on May 26, 2017 at 11:25am: Great work cleaning and polishing them up! I've had a lifelong interest in lighting and work in electrical wholesale and I've bad news for you. The standard halogen GU10 lamps were banned under the EU Energy Related Products Directive last September. There's still plenty of old stock about but once it's gone that's it.

I have a contact in Belgium who works for one of the largest lamp (bulb) manufacturers in Europe. He's confirmed that the UK government were actually pushing for far more stricter controls in lighting to be introduced within the EU, making only LED sources permissible within the next few years. So it's likely that Brexit will have either no or a worse effect on the availability of traditional light sources in the future.

Comment by Johnny on May 25, 2017 at 3:27pm: you misy like hard work, nordic's are a bugger doing the bulb fitting, im suprised youre changing the bulbs / fitting, i have no trouble buying the standard bulbs from ebay, and also use the halogen small baynet 370 lumen, 28watt = 37 watt, they heat just under a standard 40watt. BUT id be interested in what bulb fitting you will use etc for a later date when standard bulbs are gone. but if were leaving the E.U bring back are good ole bulbs :-)

Comment by Callum Carr on May 25, 2017 at 2:33pm: Thanks Andy, the main reason for the conversion is because of the ban on selling filament and halogen bayonet and Edison screw bulbs in the UK. I believe it's a part of an EU directive to push LED bulbs for energy efficiency etc. GU10 bulbs have escaped the ban for now.

It's also what mathmos are currently using in their newest lamps (with the exception of the neo). Quite a lot of the Bakelite bulb holders that were in them had gone brittle or had rusted contacts so thought that really confirmed the need to replace.
