Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

Bought a Grande on Amazon. Was a green/blue and was, of course, so cloudy I couldn't even see through it. Emptied it out and redid it with a Goo Kit. Used the 2 coils that came with the Grande, work great. Used about 50ml of surfactant, which seems to give a good combination of column and free-floating goo. I have the original 100 watt bulb in it and at home it was fine, but at work it's so cold in my office that it all melts but it won't get started unless I wrap it until it gets going, then it's fine. Go figure.

I added 5ml more surfactant and also put a foil funnel around the flood light to aim more light/heat at the lamp. It's flowing like it used to!

I ordered a bulb extender to I don't have to use the rigged foil anymore.  That sounds like a problem waiting to happen.

No bubbles in my wax.  Thanks!  I'll try to vary the temperature / bulb to see how it goes.

Thanks again!

Hey Chad the more surf you add the more it'll blob into balls. Try adding another 5-10 of surf to it. Gookit wax is very sensitive to heat and cold so in a cold room all the time you may have to boost the heat up some. You can try a bulb extender and use your current 100 watter on it. This will put the bulb closer up to the globe. if it starts to get too hot then use a dimmer on it and slowly adjust it until you get your desired flow. The only time I've ever got bad gookit wax back in October and the only thing that made it bad was it had too many bubbles in the wax. It still flowed just looked bad.

I really didn't change anything. At my house it ran the best, because it's not as cold there as my office at work. But the first 2 times I ran it at work, it was fine, then itstarted to get less gooey. It still runs, fully melted with columns of wax going to the top and sometimes balls will split off from the main wax glob.. but it's not nearly as active as it was.

I used a Goo-Kit on this one. I'll try more surfactant first, then more heat to see what happens.

Yea it may be bad wax, I redid my orange and clear china globe with a Epsom salt mix and it is working but it takes forever to heat up so i reckon it is down to the rubbish china wax.

I am not too sure about the sings of bad wax but i think over heating and under heating are one of them - its common in cheap lamps which flow (i.e. peace lamps).

Did you change anything before it went wrong - e.g. more heat then usual, left on too long etc.

Bad wax for me means it's separating. I don't think you have bad wax though.

I think I'll try that, Tim. Can't hurt. I just wish I knew what the signs of bad wax are. Doesn't really say on here anywhere that I've found, other than people saying they had bad wax, but not describing the symptoms. It's been on 5 hours today, is completely melted and partially covered with a towel (for more heat) and barely running. So weird, when I first made it, it was absolutely perfect.

Mabie add in a bit more suf and see what happens

Not a week straight. :-)  Just on every weekday for a week, and the wax seems to be wanting to ooz less and less.  It just melts into large columns of wax rather than breaking up and flowing as expected...

I though about more heat, but I am already using the 100 watt bulb supplied, and I hear that the Goo Kits need even less heat than a factory lava lamp?

Could it be bad wax?  More surfactant needed?  I put in 50ml, which is a little under the recommended level because I can always add more.

You don't mean a week straight, do you? Sounds like more heat is needed.
