Help with my recipe/balance?

I feel like I'm doing something way off with every batch I try to mix and make for my DIY lamps. I typically mix three bottles at a time with wax and fluid, since the last time I tried reusing…Continue

Wax sitting on Coil

Started this discussion. Last reply by Claude J Aug 6. 9 Replies

Not really sure what's going on with this. I've tried a few coils and they all do this- the wax just sits on top of them. It doesn't break the surface tension of the wax and I'm guessing it's not…Continue

Remote Cycling My Lamps

When making my own lava lamps, one of the frustrations I've run into is the amount of time it takes for me to heat up my globe to operating temperature and see how the balance is looking. I have to…Continue

Mottled Wax & Corrosion Issues

Started this discussion. Last reply by Claude J Jun 27. 4 Replies

One of the main issues I'm trying to address with my lamp builds is the wax appearance. Maybe with the newest batch of wax that I mixed with microcrystalline for the first time, maybe it won't be as…Continue

"Muratic acid. Last time I even saw that stuff was when my dad had to remove the lining from the inside of a motorcycle gas tank. Powerful stuff. Does it just clean the metal or does it actually affect the surface to help the wax grab better?"

Help with my recipe/balance?

I feel like I'm doing something way off with every batch I try to mix and make for my DIY lamps. I typically mix three bottles at a time with wax and fluid, since the last time I tried reusing leftover mixed lava wax, it wouldn't sink in pure distilled water indicating it was somehow losing density. I've had a lot of issues getting decent flow and lately anything to balance and flow at all. Last six bottles (two runs) seem to be duds and I'm trying not to get too frustrated with the process.Any…See More

"what kind of material is it? It looks a lot shinier than the typical stainless steel coil. Is is chrome plated or so? Chrome is repelling a lot of "stuff" thats why it is so popular in the car/bike industry."

Hey I just read that you built a suitcase with an arcade inside. Vey Cool! What hardware did you use? For years I had the idea of buildin an N64 into a suitcase of the size made to fit vinyl lp's inside and I had a hard time finding a monitor which would fit inside, not cost much and run on 12 volts or less. In the end I sold the n64 with all the games but I sort of regret it.
