Oozing Goo - The Lava Lamp Syndicate

My niece sent me her old Lava lamp. The water is purple and cloudy. I tried to replace the water a couple of times. I used distilled water, and canning salt, and a drop of dawn dish soap. It seems that no matter what I do the wax just lays on the bottom. I started at 1 tsp of salt.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Tell me about it. I tried to filter one of my cloudy Mathmos Astrobabys and now it's even cloudier than before and the lava just columns and is full of air bubbles. Disaster!
